Fatwa Panel of the Week – Volume 03 Issue 22
Congregational Prayer
According to the fatwas of the Grand Religious Authorities: Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei, Ayatollah Sistani, and Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi (may Allah prolong their blessings):
Fatāwā presented without citing a differing opinion or a specific reference are the common rulings shared by all of the three respected Marāji‘. In cases where the ruling of one Marjaʿ differs from that of the other two, it is indicated in a footnote under the same number, mentioning the Marjaʿ by name.
The Recommendation and Importance of Congregational Prayer
- It is recommended (Mustahab) that the five daily obligatory prayers be performed in congregation, and this recommendation is especially emphasized for the Fajr, Maghrib, and ʿIshāʾ prayers.
- Participating in congregational prayer is recommended for all believers; however, greater emphasis has been placed on it for those who live near the mosque and those who can hear the mosque’s adhān (call to prayer).
- If a person has already performed their prayer individually and then a congregational prayer is established afterward, it is recommended to repeat the prayer in congregation. If it later becomes clear that the first prayer was invalid, the congregational prayer will suffice.
- If a person is in the middle of performing a three- or four-rakʿah prayer and a congregational prayer begins, and they are not confident that they will be able to join the congregation after finishing their prayer, then — provided they have not yet gone into the rukūʿ (bowing) of the third rakʿah — it is recommended that they complete their prayer as a two-rakʿah recommended prayer and then join the congregation.
- If a father or mother asks their child to perform the prayer in congregation, and refraining from congregational prayer would cause them distress, then according to precaution, the child should participate in the congregational prayer.
Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani: If a father or mother instructs their child to perform the prayer in congregation, then as an obligatory precaution it is recommended that the child pray in congregation. Moreover, if the parents’ instruction or prohibition is motivated by compassion and concern for the child, and disobedience to them would cause them distress, then it is unlawful for the child to disobey them.
- A person who suffers from obsessive doubts (waswās) in prayer is not obligated to perform the prayer in congregation, unless their obsession reaches such a level that it causes them to break the prayer or excessively repeat the recitations and actions, resulting in the loss of continuity (muwālāt) and the invalidation of the prayer.
Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani: If a person’s obsessive doubts in prayer reach the point that their prayer becomes invalid, and they can only overcome these doubts by praying in congregation, then they must perform the prayer in congregation.
Prayers That May Be Performed in Congregation
- All of the daily obligatory prayers may be performed in congregation. If the imam of the congregation is performing one of the daily prayers, the follower (maʾmūm) may follow him either in the same prayer or in another daily prayer.
- If the imam is performing a current daily prayer (adāʾ), the follower may perform any of their missed daily prayers (qaḍāʾ) behind him in congregation.
- If the imam is performing a missed daily prayer (qaḍāʾ), it is valid to follow him for either an adāʾ or qaḍāʾ daily prayer. However, if the imam is performing a precautionary qaḍāʾ prayer — meaning that the obligation of that qaḍāʾ prayer is not certain — then it is not permissible to follow him in congregation, whether the prayer is for himself or on behalf of someone else.
- A person who is repeating a daily prayer out of precaution (whether obligatory or recommended precaution) may follow someone who is performing an obligatory adāʾ or qaḍāʾ prayer.
- If either the imam’s prayer or the follower’s prayer is shortened (qaṣr), the congregational prayer remains valid, and the reward of congregational prayer is still attained.
- The Friday prayer (Ṣalāt al-Jumuʿah) must be performed in congregation, and performing it individually is not valid.Top of Form
Rules of Following the Imam (Iqtidāʾ) and Special Conditions of Congregational Prayer
- If the imam of the congregation repeats his prayer out of precaution, the follower (maʾmūm) may only follow him if the follower also intends to repeat the same prayer out of precaution, and the reason for the precaution is the same for both of them.
- Repeating the role of imam in the daily prayers once is permissible, provided that the followers in the second congregation are different from those in the first congregation.
Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani: If the imam or the follower wishes to repeat a prayer that has already been performed in congregation by performing it again in congregation, although the recommendation (istiḥbāb) of such an act is not established, there is no problem in doing so with the intention of رجاء المطلوبية (hope for divine acceptance and reward).
Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi: It is permissible for an imam of congregation who has already performed his prayer once in congregation to perform it again with another congregation; however, repeating it more than twice is problematic. Therefore, one imam may lead congregational prayer in two different mosques and repeat the prayer once.
