A Mosque Founded on Piety: Lessons from Qur’an 9:108

Occasion of reflecting on this ayah: 15th of Rabi‘ al-Awwal: The anniversary of the establishment of the Mosque of Quba by Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and his Companions in the first year of the Hijrah

Introduction:

On this occasion, we reflect on a beautiful verse of the Holy Qur’an that highlights the importance of piety, purity and sincere communities.

… لَمَسْجِدٌ أُسِّسَ عَلَى التَّقْوَى مِنْ أَوَّلِ يَوْمٍ أَحَقُّ أَنْ تَقُومَ فِيهِ ۚ فِيهِ رِجَالٌ يُحِبُّونَ أَنْ يَتَطَهَّرُوا ۚ وَاللَّهُ يُحِبُّ الْمُطَّهِّرِينَ

“Indeed, a mosque founded upon piety from the very first day is more worthy for you to stand in. In it are men who love to purify themselves, and Allah loves those who purify themselves.” (Surah At-Tawbah, 9:108)

Purification and taqwa are lifelong journeys. Keep working to become cleaner in your actions, stronger in your character and closer to Allah.

Practical Challenge: Choose one habit to improve and work on it consistently for the next seven days.

5. Purify Your Intentions

Before doing anything important, check why you are doing it. The value of an action is closely connected to the sincerity of the intention behind it.

Practical Challenge: Before one good deed today, pause and renew your intention purely for the sake of Allah.

6. Love Growth and Goodness

As could be seen in this ayah, the desire to become a better and more pious person is itself a valuable step towards spiritual growth. Strengthen this desire within yourself.

Practical Challenge: Each morning, ask yourself: “What is one small way I can become a better person today?”

7. Choose Friends Who Help You Grow

A good environment can strengthen faith and character, just as a mosque founded on piety creates a healthy community.

Practical Challenge: Spend some extra time this week with a friend who encourages you to become a better person.

1. Raise Children Who Love the Mosque

Help your children develop a positive relationship with the mosque so that it becomes a familiar, welcoming and meaningful part of their lives.

Every person is responsible for their own choices, behaviour and relationship with Allah. Be responsible for yourself and teach your children to take responsibility for their actions.

The verse reminds religious leaders and educators that successful communities must be built on taqwa, not personal status, popularity or competition.

6. Teach Both Knowledge and Character

Islamic education should develop not only the mind but also the heart, behaviour and sense of responsibility towards others.

7. Inspire Continuous Self-Purification

An imam or teacher should encourage people to improve gradually rather than making them feel hopeless because of their mistakes.
