When the Week Becomes a Mirror: Lessons for a World in Need of Mercy, Learning and Justice

Introduction:

A new week does not merely bring new dates; it brings new opportunities to read our world through the light of faith. The events remembered this week – from the fate of the people of Prophet Ṣāliḥ (pbuh) to the protection of education, the prevention of suicide and the ideal of democracy – invite Muslims to connect timeless Islamic principles with the moral challenges of our own age.

9 September:  International Day to Protect Education from Attack

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 9 September as the International Day to Protect Education from Attack, reaffirming the right to education and the need for safe learning environments, particularly during armed conflict and humanitarian emergencies.

The UN has stressed that protecting education means protecting not only buildings, but also children, teachers and the future of communities. However, what is questionable is the double standards that are applied in this regard. For example, a school in Minab is targeted, and a large number of schoolchildren are killed, yet there is no effective outcry from international institutions.

Message for today: Education grounded in divine values is one of the most sacred and valuable human endeavours. It should be honoured, cherished, and protected.

28 Rabīʿ al-Awwal: The Punishment of the People of Prophet Ṣāliḥ (pbuh)

The people of Thamūd lived in the region known as al-Ḥijr and were sent Prophet Ṣāliḥ (peace be upon him), who called them to worship Allah and abandon corruption and injustice. After rejecting his message and violating the divine sign of the she-camel, they were struck by divine punishment, while Ṣāliḥ and the believers with him were saved.

Message for today: Let us not mistake power and prosperity for righteousness and moral integrity. Societies remain safe from destruction when their people stand against oppression and disobedience to divine commands, before they lead to collective ruin.

10 September: World Suicide Prevention Day

World Suicide Prevention Day is observed annually on 10 September. Its purpose is to raise awareness, reduce stigma and mobilise action around the understanding that suicide can be prevented. The 2026 campaign continues under the slogan “Changing the narrative on suicide”, calling for suicide prevention and mental health to become priorities in public policy and community action.

Islam’s approach to the issue of suicide is not merely to combat the symptom, but rather to address its underlying causes. Islam seeks to strengthen people’s faith in God and thereby help them develop a high degree of resilience and perseverance in the face of life’s hardships. It encourages people to view these hardships not as reasons to be broken, but as opportunities to become stronger and to maintain hope for the future.

The Holy Qur’an expresses this beautifully:

إِنَّ مَعَ الْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا

“Indeed, with hardship comes ease.” (Qur’an 72:6)

Message for today: Strengthen your own faith and that of your family so that you may enjoy healthier bodies and healthier minds.

15 September: International Day of Democracy

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 15 September as the International Day of Democracy. The problem with today’s world is that concepts such as democracy have been turned into tools for the powerful to impose their will and exploit different societies.

Islam places powerful ethical principles at the centre of public affairs, including justice, accountability, consultation and the rejection of tyranny. The Qur’an praises believers whose affairs are conducted through mutual consultation:

وَالَّذِينَ اسْتَجَابُوا لِرَبِّهِمْ وَأَقَامُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَأَمْرُهُمْ شُورَىٰ بَيْنَهُمْ وَمِمَّا رَزَقْنَاهُمْ يُنفِقُونَ

“And those who respond to their Lord, establish prayer, conduct their affairs by mutual consultation, and donate from what We have provided for them.” (Qur’an 42:38)

Message for today: Practise shūrā in our families, schools, mosques and societies, and let participation be guided by justice, truth and responsibility.
