Excellence in Every Action: The Islamic Teaching of Quality and Doing Things Well

Occasion for Hadith Reflection: 14 October, World Standards Day

Introduction

Islam has long emphasised the importance of carrying out tasks carefully and to the best of our ability. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught that:

قال رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم): إِنَّ اللّهَ تَعالى يُحِبُّ إِذا عَمِلَ أَحَدُكُمْ عَمَلاً أَنْ يُتْقِنَهُ

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said:

“Indeed, Allah, the Most High, loves that when any of you does a task, they do it well”

(Kanz al-Ummal, vol. 3, p. 907).

Educational Messages of the Hadith for Teenagers and Youth

  1. Always Do Your Best

Do every task as well as you can.

Practical Challenge: Choose one task today and give it your full effort.

  1. Seek Allah’s Pleasure

Let your inner values and the desire to please Allah motivate you, rather than other people’s approval.

Practical Challenge: Do one good deed this week without telling anyone or expecting praise.

  1. Don’t Just Do the Bare Minimum

Avoid doing things carelessly just to get them over with.

Practical Challenge: Choose one task you usually rush and complete it carefully this week.

  1. Choose Quality Over Quantity

Focus on doing fewer things well rather than doing many things poorly.

Practical Challenge: Complete one important task carefully before starting another.

  1. Do Good, Even When Nobody Notices

Do not let a lack of recognition stop you from doing good work with care and dedication.

Practical Challenge: Do one helpful task this week without expecting thanks or praise.

  1. Let Allah Guide Your Online Life

Make pleasing Allah your main guide in everything you post, share or do online.

Practical Challenge: Before your next post or comment, ask yourself: “Would this please Allah?”

  1. Turn Your Mistakes into Upgrades

Making a mistake does not mean you have failed; learning what went wrong and improving your next attempt is part of excellence.

Practical Challenge: Choose one recent mistake in your studies, sport or daily routine, identify its cause and write down one change you will make next time.

  1. Build One Small Habit of Excellence

You do not need to change your whole life at once; doing one small thing well every day can gradually make you more organised and dependable.

Practical Challenge: Choose one daily habit, such as keeping your study space tidy, preparing your school bag the night before or arriving on time, and practise it consistently for seven days.

Educational Messages of the Hadith for Parents

  1. Value Effort, Not Just Results

Appreciate your children’s sincere effort and improvement, not only their short-term achievements.

Practical Challenge: Praise your child for one specific effort they make this week, regardless of the result.

  1. Parent for the Sake of Allah

Do everything for your children and family with the intention of seeking Allah’s pleasure and closeness to Him.

Practical Challenge: Before one daily parenting task, renew your intention to do it for Allah’s sake.

  1. Learn to Be a Better Parent

Fulfil your parenting responsibilities to the best of your ability by developing the knowledge and skills you need.

Practical Challenge: Learn one practical parenting skill this week from a reliable book, course or expert, and put it into practice.

  1. Lead by Example

Children learn the value of quality when they see their parents completing everyday tasks carefully, keeping promises and taking responsibility for their actions.

Practical Challenge: Choose one regular household task, such as preparing a meal or organising family schedules, and carry it out carefully for a week while explaining to your children why you take care with it.

Educational Messages of the Hadith for Imams and Teachers

  1. Teach the Value of Seeking Allah’s Pleasure

Explain how seeking Allah’s pleasure can give our efforts deeper meaning and guide us towards good and lasting outcomes.

Practical Challenge: Share one simple example in your next lesson or sermon of how sincere intentions can change the way we work.

  1. Give Your Educational Role Your Best

Shaping people’s minds, behaviour and character is a great responsibility, so carry it out with care and leave no reasonable effort unmade.

Practical Challenge: Improve one part of your next lesson or sermon by preparing more carefully and adding a clear, practical example.

  1. Teach Three Types of Excellence

Explain excellence in intention (doing it for the right reason), action (doing it properly) and speech (speaking truthfully and carefully).

Practical Challenge: In your next session, give one everyday example of each type and ask your audience to practise one of them during the week.

  1. Review Your Work and Improve It

A commitment to excellence means regularly checking whether your teaching or community activities are helping people and making sensible improvements when needed.

Practical Challenge: After your next lesson, sermon or community programme, ask three participants for one thing that worked well and one thing that could be improved, then make one practical change at your next session.
