Beyond Recitation: Following the Qur’an with Taqwa

Introduction & Occasion of Reflecting on This Ayah

On the 18th of Muharram, we remember the passing of Allama Sayyid Muhammad Husayn Tabataba’i, one of the most influential Muslim scholars of the modern era. His monumental work, Tafsir al-Mizan, is regarded as one of the most important contemporary commentaries on the Holy Qur’an. A distinctive feature of al-Mizan is its method of interpreting the Qur’an through the Qur’an itself (Tafsir al-Qur’an bil-Qur’an). On this occasion, we reflect upon a verse that speaks directly about the Qur’an and its role in guiding humanity.

وَهَذَا كِتَابٌ أَنْزَلْنَاهُ مُبَارَكٌ فَاتَّبِعُوهُ وَاتَّقُوا لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ

“And this is a blessed Book which We have sent down, so follow it and be mindful of Allah, so that you may receive mercy.” (Surah al-An’am, 6:155)

Educational Messages of the Ayah for Teenagers and Youth

  1. Strengthen Your Connection with the Qur’an

Improving your Qur’an recitation and memorisation will make it easier to understand and follow its guidance.

Practical Challenge: Spend at least 10 minutes each day reciting or memorising Qur’an.

  1. Focus on the Qur’an’s Main Goals

The ultimate purpose of the Qur’an is not only to be read, but to be followed and to help us develop taqwa (God-consciousness).

Practical Challenge: Choose one Qur’anic teaching this week and put it into practice.

  1. Follow All the Messages of Quran, Not Part of it!

True faith means accepting and applying all of Allah’s guidance, not only the parts that seem easy or convenient.

Practical Challenge: Reflect on one Qur’anic instruction that you find difficult and take a step towards applying it.

  1. Use Qur’an is a Living Guide

The Qur’an is not only for recitation; it offers guidance for everyday decisions and challenges.

Practical Challenge: Read one verse each day and think about how it applies to your life.

  1. Develop God-Consciousness

Taqwa helps young people resist harmful pressures and remain true to their values.

Practical Challenge: Spend five minutes each evening reviewing your actions and intentions.

  1. Aim for Divine Mercy

Success is not measured only by wealth or popularity, but by earning Allah’s mercy.

Practical Challenge: Perform one act of kindness each day without expecting anything in return.

Educational Messages of the Ayah for Parents

  1. Invest in Your Children’s Qur’anic Education

Helping your children learn and love the Qur’an is one of the most valuable investments you can make for their future.

Practical Challenge: Set a family goal to improve Qur’an recitation, memorisation, or understanding together this month.

  1. Turn the Qur’an into a Family Practice

The Qur’an has the greatest impact when it is lived, not just read. Choose one verse and apply it together as a family.

Practical Challenge: This week, select one Qur’anic teaching and encourage every family member to practise it daily.

  1. Show the Qur’an’s Relevance to Daily Life

Help your children see how the Qur’an provides guidance for making wise decisions, building good character, and facing modern challenges.

Practical Challenge: Share one real-life family decision and discuss how Qur’anic values can help guide it.

  1. Protect Children with Taqwa

Parents should help children develop moral awareness in a rapidly changing digital world.

Practical Challenge: Have an open conversation about responsible online behaviour from an Islamic perspective.

  1. Raise Children with Hope in Allah’s Mercy

Parents should make their utmost effort in raising and educating their children, and then seek from God’s mercy that their children become believers. For this prayer to be answered, and for both parents and children to be encompassed by divine mercy, adherence to the Qur’an and the parents’ piety (taqwa) can be influential, according to this verse.

Practical Challenge: Share one story each week about Allah’s mercy from the Qur’an or Islamic history.

Educational Messages of the Ayah for Imams and Teachers

  1. Bring the Qur’an into Everyday Life

Give the Qur’an a central place in your mosque, school, and community, and help people connect its teachings to their daily lives and personal growth.

Practical Challenge: Introduce one practical Qur’anic lesson each week that addresses a real-life challenge faced by your audience.

  1. Teach Taqwa through Real-Life Examples

Help people understand that taqwa is more than avoiding sins; it is making God-conscious choices in everyday situations.

Practical Challenge: In your next lesson or sermon, share three practical examples of taqwa from family life, work, school, or online interactions.

  1. Encourage Action, Not Information Alone

The verse commands believers to follow the Qur’an, not merely to know it.

Practical Challenge: Launch a “Qur’an in Action” initiative and invite participants to practise one Qur’anic teaching each week.

  1. Build Unity through the Qur’an

The Qur’an provides common principles that can unite diverse Muslim communities.

Practical Challenge: Highlight one shared Qur’anic value during community gatherings this month.

  1. Inspire Hope and Mercy

People facing difficulties need reminders of Allah’s mercy alongside guidance and accountability.

Practical Challenge: In every sermon, class, or educational gathering, present at least one message of hope about God’s mercy and compassion, along with the prerequisites for benefiting from that mercy.
