Do Not Be Misled by People: Personal Responsibility in the Light of a Hadith
Introduction & Occasion of Reflecting on This Hadith
The 15th of Shawwal marks the anniversary of the passing of Abd al-Azim Hasani (peace be upon him), a noble figure who preserved and transmitted valuable teachings from the Ahl al-Bayt. Among the traditions he narrated is a profound saying from Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (peace be upon him), recorded in Al-Kafi. This hadith reminds us of a central truth: every individual is ultimately accountable for their own actions and destiny.
Imam Bagher (as): “Do not let people deceive you concerning yourself, for the matter will ultimately reach you, not them.”
Educational Messages of the Hadith for Teens and Youth
- Be Careful Who You Choose as Friends
Your friends play a major role in shaping your character and faith. Be mindful not to befriend those who distance you from God and your beliefs.
Practical Challenge: This week, take some distance from a friend whose faith is weaker than yours.
- Be Strong Against Social Pressure
Friends may make wrong things look attractive, but you must stay true to your values. Do not blindly follow friends or trends.
Practical Challenge: Write down one religious and ethical value and stick to it in one real situation this week.
- Remember: Consequences Are Yours
Others may encourage you, but they will not face the results.
Practical Challenge: Before a risky choice, ask: “Am I ready to accept the result alone?”
- Do Not Chase Approval
Seeking constant approval from peers can lead you away from the right path.
Practical Challenge: Do one good action daily without telling anyone about it.
- Focus on Your Future
Others will not carry the results of your actions into your future.
Practical Challenge: Write one personal goal and take a small step towards it today.
- Do Things for God, Not for People
When your intention is for God, you will not be misled by people’s opinions.
Practical Challenge: Before doing any good action, quietly say: “I do this for God only,” and do not tell anyone about it.
- Think About the End Before You Begin
Do not focus only on the immediate pleasure or difficulty. Start an action only when you have considered its final outcome and are satisfied with it.
Practical Challenge: This week, before making an important decision, write down three points about its possible mid-term and long-term consequences.
Educational Messages of the Hadith for Parents
- Ignore Social Comparison
Comparing your child to others can lead to wrong decisions.
Practical Challenge: Stop one comparison this week and instead highlight your child’s own progress.
- Model Responsibility
Children learn accountability by observing you.
Practical Challenge: Admit one small mistake openly in front of your child.
- Teach Independent Thinking
Help children think, not just obey.
Practical Challenge: Ask your child “Why do you think this is right?” during discussions.
- Guide More Than Control
Over-control prevents children from learning responsibility.
Practical Challenge: Let your child make one small decision independently this week.
- Be Careful Who You Bring Around Your Family
The people your family spends time with can either bring them closer to God or distance them from faith.
Practical Challenge: This week, arrange a family gathering with a family whose values and lifestyle reflect strong faith.
Educational Messages of the Hadith for Imams and Teachers
- Do Not Be Deceived by Respect
People’s respect does not mean you are perfect. Public admiration can hide personal flaws if you are not careful.
Practical Challenge: Take 5 minutes daily for self-reflection on your own weaknesses.
- Protect Your Sincerity
Your real value is in your intention, not your popularity.
Practical Challenge: Perform one act of teaching or service that no one knows about.
- Encourage Self-Reflection
Help individuals think about their own decisions and actions, trying to identify and stop their mistakes.
Practical Challenge: Teach your audience a few simple self-reflection techniques.
- Address Social Influence
Teach how society can mislead individuals.
Practical Challenge: Discuss one example of peer pressure and how to resist it.
- Teach Accountability Clearly
Help people understand what responsibility means, its types, and how to improve it.
Practical Challenge: In your next lesson or sermon, explain one type of responsibility (e.g. personal or social) with a simple real-life example.
