Not for Sale: The Spiritual Value of the Human Body in Islam

Introduction & Occasion of Reflection on this Hadith

On the 3rd and 4th of Ordibehesht, we commemorate two noble sons of Imam Musa al-Kazim (peace be upon him), Hazrat Ṣāliḥ ibn Mūsā and Hazrat Aḥmad ibn Mūsā, known as Shah Cheragh. On this meaningful occasion, we reflect on a profound ethical teaching from Imam Musa al-Kazim (A.S.) that reminds us of the true worth of the human being and the responsibility we carry towards ourselves.

Imam Musa ibn Ja‘far (peace be upon him):

“Your bodies have no price except Paradise, so do not sell them for anything less.”

Educational Messages from the Hadith for Teens and Youth

  1. Using Your Body for God’s Pleasure

Use your eyes, ears, hands, and all your abilities only in ways that please God.

Practical Challenge: Today, try to consciously avoid one action that you feel does not please God and replace it with a good deed.

  1. Developing Self-Awareness of Your Actions

Become more aware of how you use your body – because you cannot improve what you are not aware of.

Practical Challenge: At the end of today, reflect for 2 minutes: “Did I use my body well for good or not?”

  1. Know When Your Body Has Real Worth

Your body is not something cheap or meaningless; it has a high spiritual value when you use it in a right way.

Practical Challenge: Write down three healthy habits you will start to use your body to comply with what Allah wants.

  1. Don’t Trade Dignity for Temporary Pleasure

Avoid actions that feel good for a moment but harm you later (like harmful habits).

Practical Challenge: Identify one bad habit and take a step to reduce it today.

Educational Messages from the Hadith for Parents

  1. Leading by Example, Not Just Words

Show your children through your actions how to use your body in ways that please God.

Practical Challenge: Do one visible good deed today that your child can observe and learn from.

  1. Protecting Family Influence and Company

Do not let your children closely follow or imitate people who misuse their lives and bodies in harmful ways.

Practical Challenge: Review one friendship or influence your child has and gently guide them if needed.

  1. Teaching Body Respect Early

Children must learn from home that their body is a trust from God.

Practical Challenge: Have a short family talk about healthy living this week.

  1. Building Self-Worth in Children

Help children understand that their worth should not be measured by appearance or trends, but by how well they use their bodies in ways that please God.

Practical Challenge: Compliment your child on character, not appearance, today.

Educational Messages from the Hadith for Imams and Teachers

  1. Practical Use of the Body for Good

Teach people how every part of the body can be used in ways that earn God’s pleasure.

Practical Challenge: In your next talk or class, give one clear real-life example for the right use of each body part (eyes, tongue, hands).

  1. Linking Body and Soul

Explain that the body and soul are interconnected, and guiding one towards goodness is not possible without the support and alignment of the other.

Practical Challenge: Share a short explanation of how good actions strengthen both spiritual and physical wellbeing.

  1. How the Body Can Lead to Harm

Clarify that the misuse of the body – through sin or harmful behaviour – can distance a person from long-term peace, wellbeing, happiness, and ultimately Paradise.

Practical Challenge: Teach one warning example showing how a small action can grow into a harmful habit.

  1. Addressing Modern Pressures

Help youth resist harmful social pressures that devalue their dignity and faith.

Practical Challenge: Discuss one modern challenge affecting youth wellbeing.

  1. Promoting Accountability

Encourage your audiences to think about consequences before acting.

Practical Challenge: Give your audiences one decision-making framework to use in daily life.
