The Tree, The Fall, The Beginning: The Story of Adam (as)

High above the earth, before time had meaning for us, Allah (swt) created Prophet Adam (as), the first human, and declared to the angels:

“I am placing upon the earth a khalifah.” (Qur’an 2:30)

From the very beginning, Adam (as) was destined for the earth, not as a fall from purpose, but as part of a divine plan. Allah (swt) taught him “the names, all of them” (Qur’an 2:31), granting him knowledge that even the angels did not possess. When they saw this, they bowed in obedience, all except Iblis, who refused out of arrogance (Qur’an 2:34).

Then Allah (swt) said, “O Adam, dwell, you and your wife, in the Garden, and eat freely from wherever you wish, but do not approach this tree, lest you become among the zalimin.” (Qur’an 2:35)

With Hawwa (as), Adam (as) lived in peace, until the whisper came. Shaytan did not command, he deceived:

“Shall I guide you to the tree of eternity and a kingdom that never decays?” (Qur’an 20:120)

And so, they tasted.

The Qur’an captures the moment with striking simplicity, “So they both ate from it, and their shame became apparent to them…” (Qur’an 7:22)

But the heart of the story is not the slip, it is the turning back. “Then Adam received kalimat from his Lord, and He accepted his repentance. Indeed, He is al-Tawwab, al-Rahim.” (Qur’an 2:37)

In the Shia tradition, these kalimat are deeply meaningful, a turning to Allah (swt) through those whom He loves most, the Ahl al-Bayt (as), a path of wasilah that perfects repentance and draws the servant nearer.

Yet Allah (swt) decreed, “Descend from it, all of you. And when guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows My guidance, there shall be no fear upon them, nor shall they grieve.” (Qur’an 2:38)

Adam (as) was sent to the earth, not abandoned, but guided. Not rejected but forgiven.

His descent was the beginning of our story, a life of imtihan, of striving, of ruju’ ila Allah.

This is the lesson: even the first of creation slipped, but he rose through repentance. The door was not closed; it was opened wider.

So, when you fall, remember Adam (as). The path back is always there, and Allah (swt) is always ready to accept the one who returns.
