Timeless Guidance for Today’s Challenges
Introduction
The coming week gathers together moments of spiritual remembrance, intellectual legacy, and global responsibility. For Muslim educators and community leaders, these occasions offer an opportunity to connect timeless Islamic principles with the urgent needs of our contemporary world.
3 Ordibehesht (23 April): Commemoration of Hazrat Ṣāliḥ ibn Mūsā al-Kāẓim (peace be upon him)
Hazrat Ṣāliḥ, son of Imam Mūsā al-Kāẓim (peace be upon him), is remembered for his devotion, piety, and resistance against oppression during the Abbasid era. His life reflects the struggles faced by the Ahl al-Bayt (pbut) and their followers. In an age marked by injustice and moral confusion, his example reminds us to uphold truth and integrity.
Message for Today:
Remain steadfast in faith and justice, even when facing adversity.
3 Ordibehesht (23 April): Commemoration of Shaykh Bahā’ī
Shaykh Bahā’ī (Bahāʾ al-Dīn al-ʿĀmilī) was a renowned Safavid-era scholar, excelling in jurisprudence, mathematics, astronomy, and architecture. He symbolises the integration of religious and worldly knowledge.
His legacy highlights the importance of intellectual excellence in serving society. Islam honours knowledge:
هَلْ يَسْتَوِي الَّذِينَ يَعْلَمُونَ وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ
“Are those who know equal to those who do not know?” (Qur’an 39:9)
Message for Today:
Pursue knowledge that benefits both faith and society.
4 Ordibehesht (24 April): Commemoration of Hazrat Aḥmad ibn Mūsā (Shāh Cherāgh) (peace be upon him)
Hazrat Aḥmad ibn Mūsā, known as Shāh Cherāgh, was a noble son of Imam Mūsā al-Kāẓim (peace be upon him). He is revered for his courage, generosity, and loyalty to his brother Imam al-Riḍā (peace be upon him). His life teaches loyalty to truth and service to others.
Message for Today:
Serve your community with sincerity and selflessness.
22 April: International Mother Earth Day
Established by the United Nations, this day promotes environmental protection and awareness of ecological challenges facing the planet.
Environmental stewardship has been central to Islamic teaching since more than 1400 years ago. Holy Quran teaches us that humanity is entrusted as guardians of the Earth:
هُوَ أَنْشَأَكُمْ مِنَ الْأَرْضِ وَاسْتَعْمَرَكُمْ فِيهَا
“He produced you from the earth and settled you in it.” (Qur’an 11:61)
Message for Today:
Protect the Earth and the environment as a trust (amānah) from Allah.
23 April: World Book and Copyright Day
This UNESCO initiative celebrates books, authors, and the importance of reading and intellectual property. The first revelation of Islam began with a call to read:
اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ
“Read in the name of your Lord who created.” (Qur’an 96:1)
In a digital age, ethical use of knowledge and respect for authorship are increasingly important.
Message for Today:
Promote reading, learning, and ethical sharing of knowledge.
24 April: International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace
This day underscores the importance of international cooperation and peaceful dialogue in resolving global conflicts.
Holy Quran encourages peace, justice, and dialogue among nations:
وَإِن جَنَحُوا لِلسَّلْمِ فَاجْنَحْ لَهَا
“And if they incline to peace, then incline to it.” (Qur’an 8:61)
Message for Today:
Engage in dialogue and cooperation to build a more peaceful world.
Last words
These occasions remind us that faith is not confined to ritual, but extends to knowledge, service, environmental care, and global responsibility. By drawing on Islamic teachings, we can guide our communities towards a more ethical, balanced, and purposeful life.
