Faith Under Pressure: Lessons from Uhud, Baqīʿ and Khandaq
Introduction
As we approach another significant week in the Islamic calendar, we are reminded that history in Islam is not merely to be remembered, but to be lived. Each occasion offers timeless guidance for strengthening faith, deepening awareness, and improving how we serve our communities today.
7th Shawwal: The Battle of Uhud & Martyrdom of Ḥamzah ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib (3 AH)
The Battle of Uhud took place near Madinah, where the Muslims faced a difficult trial after initial success turned into setback due to disobedience. Among the martyrs was Ḥamzah, the beloved uncle of the Prophet (PBUH).
Uhud teaches that even sincere communities can face hardship when discipline and unity are weakened. The Qur’an reflects on this:
«وَلَقَدْ صَدَقَكُمُ اللَّهُ وَعْدَهُ… حَتَّىٰ إِذَا فَشِلْتُمْ وَتَنَازَعْتُمْ فِي الْأَمْرِ…» (آلعمران: ۱۵۲)
“And Allah had certainly fulfilled His promise to you… until when you lost courage and disputed in the matter…”
Message for Today:
Unity and discipline are essential for the success of any Muslim community.
8th Shawwal: Destruction of Jannat al-Baqīʿ (Yawm al-Hadm) (1344 AH / 1926 CE)
On this day, the graves of revered figures, including members of the Prophet’s family in Jannat al-Baqīʿ in Madinah, were demolished. This act deeply saddened Muslims worldwide and remains a point of collective grief.
This event highlights the importance of preserving Islamic heritage and respecting sacred history. The Qur’an reminds us:
«ذَٰلِكَ وَمَن يُعَظِّمْ شَعَائِرَ اللَّهِ فَإِنَّهَا مِن تَقْوَى الْقُلُوبِ» (الحج: ۳۲)
“That [is so]. And whoever honours the symbols of Allah – indeed, it is from the piety of hearts.”
Message for Today:
Respecting and preserving Islamic symbols is a sign of true piety.
10th Shawwal: Beginning of the Battle of the Trench (Ghazwah al-Khandaq) (5 AH)
Facing a coalition of enemies, the Muslims adopted a defensive strategy by digging a trench around Madinah, based on the suggestion of Salman al-Farsi. This marked a turning point in strategic thinking in Islamic history.
Khandaq teaches the value of wisdom, consultation, and innovation. The Prophet (PBUH) said:
«سَلمانُ مِنّا أهلَ البَیتِ»
“Salman is one of us, from the People of the Household.”
This highlights that merit and contribution outweigh lineage or background.
Message for Today:
Wise ideas and sincere contributions, regardless of origin, strengthen the Ummah.
Last word
These occasions remind us that challenges, losses, and victories are all part of the Muslim journey. For today’s imams and community leaders, the task is to translate these lessons into practical guidance – building united, thoughtful, and principled communities rooted in faith and wisdom.
