Lessons We Shouldn’t Miss This Week

Introduction

As we enter the first week of April, a rich set of historical and global occasions invites us to reflect on knowledge, responsibility, conscience, and wellbeing. These moments offer Muslim leaders an opportunity to connect timeless Islamic teachings with today’s complex realities.

12th Shawwal: Passing of Shaykh Baha’i (1031 AH)

Shaykh Baha’i was a renowned scholar, jurist, scientist, and architect of the Safavid era, known for his contributions to Islamic sciences and urban design in Isfahan. His life reflects the deep integration of faith and intellect. Islam encourages seeking knowledge that benefits society, as prophet Muhammad (PBUH) says:

«طَلَبُ الْعِلْمِ فَرِيضَةٌ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ و مسلمه» (بحارالانوار، ج ۱، ص ۱۷۷)

“Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim.”

Message for Today: Combine religious commitment with intellectual excellence.

13th Shawwal: Birth of Shahid Thani (911 AH)

Shahid Thani was a prominent Shi‘i jurist and scholar who was later martyred for his beliefs and scholarship. His life symbolises courage in upholding truth despite pressurean urgent need in today’s world of compromise.

Message for Today: Stand firm on truth, even when it is difficult.

15th Shawwal: Battle of Banu Qaynuqa (2 AH)

This was one of the early conflicts in Madinah between Muslims and the Jewish tribe of Banu Qaynuqa after they violated their agreements with Muslims. It highlights the importance of justice, accountability, and honouring agreements in social coexistence.

Message for Today: Uphold justice and integrity in all community dealings.

15th Shawwal: Passing of Abd al-Azim Hasani (252 AH)

A respected descendant of Imam Hasan (AS), he was a transmitter of hadith and a trusted scholar buried in Rey, Iran. His legacy reminds us of preserving authentic knowledge and remaining connected to Ahl-al-Bayt (pbut).

Message for Today: Be a trustworthy carrier of knowledge.

5th April: International Day of Conscience

Established by the United Nations to promote peace, tolerance, and moral awareness globally.

In a world of moral confusion, Islam emphasises the inner compass (basīrah and fiṭrah).

Qur’an teaches us that:

«بَلِ الْإِنْسَانُ عَلَىٰ نَفْسِهِ بَصِيرَةٌ»

“Indeed, Man is his own best witness.” (75:14)

Message for Today: Listen to your conscience before justifying your actions.

7th April: World Health Day

World Health Day is organised annually by the World Health Organisation to raise awareness about global health issues. Islam promotes holistic healthphysical, mental, and spiritualas a trust from Allah.

Message for Today: Take care of your health as an act of worship.
