About the Author:
Mullā Ṣadrā (Ṣadr ad-Dīn Muḥammad Shīrāzī, c. 1572–1640) was an Iranian Shī‘ī Islamic philosopher and theologian, considered arguably the most important and influential philosopher in the Muslim world in the last four centuries, who led a cultural renaissance in 17th-century Iran. He is the seminal figure of the Transcendent Theosophy (al-Ḥikmah al-Muta‘āliyah), a philosophical school that profoundly synthesised Peripatetic (Aristotelian), Illuminationist (Suhrawardī), and Gnostic (Ibn ‘Arabī) philosophy with Shī‘ī theology, most famously by positing the primacy of existence (aṣālat al-wujūd) over essence and introducing the concept of Substantial Motion (al-ḥarakah al-jawhariyyah).
About the Book:
Life after Death, offers a profound metaphysical and philosophical exploration of eschatology (the study of the afterlife) within the context of Islamic thought, arguing that bodily death is not a termination of consciousness but an awakening of the soul to a new mode of existence. Drawing on his doctrine of Substantial Motion and the immateriality of the soul, Mulla Sadra posits that the individual’s consciousness and selfhood continue their journey in an imaginal realm, where the form of the self in the next life is a manifestation of the deeds and beliefs cultivated during the earthly, corporeal existence, ultimately progressing toward union with the intelligible world.
