Hadith Of The Week – Volume 03 Issue 29
The Two Faces of Patience: Enduring Hardship and Avoiding Wrongdoing
Occasion of Reflecting on this Hadith: The birth of Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (peace be upon him)
Introduction
Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (peace be upon him) was renowned for his profound knowledge, wisdom, and guidance in nurturing righteous character. On this joyful occasion, we reflect on one of his beautiful sayings that teaches us the true meaning of patience:
امام محمد الباقر (ع):
اَلصَّبْرُ صَبْرَانِ: صَبْرٌ عَلَى الْبَلَاءِ حَسَنٌ جَمِيلٌ، وَأَفْضَلُ الصَّبْرَيْنِ الْوَرَعُ عَنِ الْمَحَارِمِ.
Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (peace be upon him):
“Patience is of two kinds: patience in the face of hardship, which is noble and beautiful; and the better of the two is exercising restraint by keeping away from what Allah has made forbidden.” (Al-Wāfī, Vol. 4, p. 335)
Educational Messages of the Hadith for Teenagers and Youth
- Real Strength Is Saying “No”
Being strong is not only about surviving difficult times. Real strength is choosing not to do something wrong, even when everyone else is doing it.
Practical Challenge: This week, say “no” to one temptation that you know is wrong, even if your friends encourage it.
- Don’t Let Feelings & Emotions Control Your Choices
Anger, sadness, excitement, or peer pressure should not decide your actions. Think before you act.
Practical Challenge: Before making an important decision, pause for one minute and ask yourself, “Will I be proud of this tomorrow?”
- Every Small Choice Builds Your Character
Good character grows through small, everyday decisions – not only big moments.
Practical Challenge: Choose one seemingly small sin and make a conscious effort to avoid it for seven consecutive days.
- Online Choices Matter Too
Patience also means controlling yourself on social media, in games, and while using your phone.
Practical Challenge: Before posting, commenting, or sharing anything, ask yourself whether it is respectful and pleasing to Allah.
- Think Long-Term, Not Just Right Now
A few moments of self-control can protect your future from regret.
Practical Challenge: The next time you feel tempted, wait ten minutes before acting and use that time to think about the consequences.
Educational Messages of the Hadith for Parents
- Be a Calm Example in Difficult Times
Stay patient and avoid panic when facing problems. Your children learn how to deal with hardship by watching you.
Practical Challenge: The next time you face a difficulty, respond calmly and later explain to your child why patience is the better choice.
- Practise Self-Reflection Together
Regularly think about your actions and encourage your children to do the same. Self-reflection helps every member of the family gradually overcome the sins and bad habits they struggle with.
Practical Challenge: Spend five minutes together each evening talking about one good thing you did today and one thing you would like to improve tomorrow.
- Teach Patience by Your Own Example
Children learn patience more from what they see than from what they hear.
Practical Challenge: During one stressful situation this week, stay calm and explain to your children how patience helps you respond wisely.
- Help Children Resist Temptation
Good parenting includes teaching children how to avoid wrong choices, not only how to recover from mistakes.
Practical Challenge: Have a family discussion about one common temptation and agree on a practical way to avoid it.
- Praise Self-Control
Celebrate moments when your children choose what is right, even if nobody is watching.
Practical Challenge: This week, praise your child at least once for showing honesty, patience, or self-control.
- Talk About Consequences Before Problems Happen
Preparing children in advance helps them make better decisions under pressure.
Practical Challenge: Choose one real-life situation and ask your child, “What would you do if this happened?”
