Halal Sustenance: When God Sets the Clock to “Test Mode”

I was in eighth grade, at that age when you begin to feel yourself growing up, and in my mind, adulthood seemed tied to small things, like owning a wristwatch. Back then, digital watches had just become fashionable. To me, they were a symbol of prestige, maturity, and manhood.

But life at home was different after my father passed away unexpectedly. My mother, with endless patience, and my brothers, with quiet sacrifice, were carrying the weight of life on their shoulders. Even as a teenager, I understood well enough that I should not add another burden to their tired hearts with my wishes. So, I buried my dream of owning a watch deep inside my heart.

One day, after recess had ended and the schoolyard was nearly empty, something shining in the dust caught my eye. I walked closer, and my breath stopped. There, lying on the ground, was a digital watch exactly like the one I used to dream about at night. I picked it up. The feel of the plastic strap and the glowing numbers on the screen made my heart race. The mischievous voice of adolescence whispered in my ear: “This school has 1,200 students! How are you ever going to find the owner? He’s probably already given up. Maybe this is God’s gift to you, a reward because you never wanted to trouble your family.”

But something inside me refused to rest. The values I had been raised with were at war with that tempting logic. My heart felt uneasy. The watch weighed heavily on my hand, not because of its physical weight, but because of the burden of someone else’s right. In the middle of that inner battle between conscience and temptation, I saw one of my teachers. It felt as though an angel had appeared to rescue me. I explained what had happened. He suggested I hand the watch to the school office so they could announce it the next morning during assembly.

Still, temptation would not let go: “At least wear it until tomorrow morning… then turn it in.” But I was afraid that if I tasted the joy of owning it even once, I would never be able to let it go. So I ran to the office, placed the watch on the vice principal’s desk, and walked out of school feeling as though a massive burden had been lifted from my shoulders. That evening, our home felt warmer than usual. My sister had come to visit. After lunch, she called me over with a smile on her face, one hand hidden behind her back.

“Guess what I bought for you!” Excited, I replied, “A storybook?” “Nope. Guess again!” Then she brought her hand forward. Time froze. My eyes filled with tears. I could not speak. In her hand was a digital watch, shining brightly. The exact same colour. The exact same model. The exact same features as the watch I had handed over at school just a few hours earlier. That day, I learned that this world runs on a precise divine order. When a person gives up something doubtful or forbidden for the sake of God, God returns it in a way that is pure, honourable, and sweeter than imagined. That watch was no longer just a tool for telling time. It became a compass that pointed me toward the right path in life: “Never leave the right road in order to reach your dreams, because the true Owner of dreams knows exactly when, and how, to place them in your hands.”

Lessons from This Story

  1. Honesty Brings Peace: The right path may sometimes seem longer, but the destination it leads to is filled with peace, dignity, and blessing.
  2. Whatever Is Left for God Will Return Better: When someone gives up an immediate but doubtful pleasure for the sake of God and the purity of the soul, God returns the same blessing through a path filled with honour and without humiliation.
  3. The Perfect Timing of the True Giver: There is no need for dishonest shortcuts or compromising one’s values to achieve our desires. Halal sustenance reaches us at the right time and often through doors we never expected. In other words: “The true Owner of our dreams delivers them to us precisely when the time is right.”
