The Day the Gate Was Lifted, Khaybar
The sun rose over the fortresses of Khaybar, their stone walls proud and defiant, ringed by palm groves and iron gates. For days, the believers had faced resistance. Strong men had advanced, then returned, their resolve tested by locked gates and unyielding defences. Fatigue settled into the camp, and hearts searched for certainty.
That night, the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) spoke words that travelled through the tents like light. Tomorrow, he said, the banner would be given to a man who loved Allah and His Messenger (pbuh), and whom Allah and His Messenger (pbuh) loved. Anticipation filled the air. Every soul wondered, not out of pride, but out of longing to be worthy of such love.
At dawn, the Prophet (pbuh) called for Imam Ali (as). Imam Ali (as) came forward, his eyes aching with pain. The Prophet (pbuh) placed his blessed hand upon them and prayed. The pain vanished, as if it had never been. The banner was placed in Ali’s hand, not as a symbol of strength alone, but as a trust.
Imam Ali (as) walked towards the fortress with calm steps. He did not rush, for his heart was steady. When the challenge came, he met it with certainty in Allah (swt). Steel clashed, dust rose, and in that moment, history held its breath. Then, with a strength born of faith, Imam Ali (as) uprooted the gate of the fortress. What many could not move together, he lifted alone. Not for spectacle, not for legend, but because reliance upon Allah turns impossibility into action.
The gate fell, the fortress opened, and Khaybar was overcome. Yet the greatest victory was not the collapse of stone walls. It was the unveiling of a truth. True power does not lie in numbers or weapons. It lies in sincerity, obedience, and unshakeable trust in Allah (swt).
Khaybar teaches us that moments of delay are not moments of abandonment. When the door seems closed, Allah (swt) prepares the key. When strength appears absent, faith reveals its weight. And when the banner is heavy, it is carried by those whose hearts are lighter with attachment to this world.
May we learn from Khaybar to stand firm, to wait with patience, and to act with certainty. For the gates that face us today are not of stone, but of fear, doubt, and hesitation. And they too can be lifted, when we walk forward with Allah (swt) at our side.
