From Adam to Karbala: Lessons from the Week Ahead

Introduction

This week’s cycle of remembrance brings together prophetic history, moments of profound trial, and contemporary moral observances. Each event, though rooted in different eras, offers enduring guidance for faith, justice, and ethical conduct in the present age.

2nd Muharram: Passing of Prophet Adam (AS)

Prophet Adam (AS), regarded as the first human and first prophet, is believed in some narrations to have passed away on this date. His life represents the beginning of human responsibility before God. His story, including his repentance after the lapse in Paradise, forms the foundation of human moral accountability.

Message for Today: Every human being carries both the capacity to err and the duty to return to God with sincerity.

2nd Muharram: Arrival of Imam Hussain (AS) in Karbala

Imam Hussain (AS) arrived in Karbala in 61 AH, where his caravan was intercepted. This marked the beginning of the tragic journey leading to Ashura. The site would become the stage for one of history’s most significant stands against tyranny.

Message for Today: Karbala represents resistance to oppression regardless of cost. Standing for truth may demand sacrifice, but it preserves moral integrity.

3rd Muharram: Prophet Yusuf (AS) Released from Prison

Prophet Yusuf (AS) was released from prison after his innocence was proven. His patience through injustice became a defining moment of his prophetic journey.

Message for Today: Patience in injustice, coupled with trust in God and striving to uphold and restore one’s rights, leads to eventual justice.

3rd Muharram: Prophetic Diplomacy: Invitation of Foreign Leaders to Islam

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) sent letters inviting rulers of neighbouring states to Islam, establishing diplomatic outreach. This marked the expansion of Islam beyond Arabia through peaceful communication.

Message for Today: Dialogue and invitation based on wisdom remain key Islamic principles.

4th Muharram: Destruction of Nimrod

Nimrod, the tyrant who opposed Prophet Ibrahim (AS), is reported to have met his end after defying divine truth. His downfall symbolizes the collapse of arrogant power.

Message for Today: Tyranny, however powerful, is ultimately unsustainable.

4th Muharram: Speech of Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad against Imam Hussain (AS) in Kufa

Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad delivered a political address reinforcing authority over Kufa, escalating tensions against Imam Hussain (AS).

Message for Today: Political authority must be bound by justice and accountability. Authority without ethics becomes oppression.

5th Muharram: Crossing of the Nile by Prophet Musa (AS)

Prophet Musa (AS) led the Children of Israel through the parted sea, escaping Pharaoh’s pursuit. This miracle marked divine intervention in favour of the oppressed.

Message for Today: Liberation from oppression is a recurring divine theme.

6th Muharram: Martyrdom of Prophet Yahya (John the Baptist) (AS)

Prophet Yahya (AS) was executed for upholding moral truth and opposing corruption.

His martyrdom is a symbol of unwavering integrity.

Message for Today: Truth-telling remains dangerous yet essential.

6th Muharram: First Siege of the Euphrates in Karbala & Blockade of Water on the Ahl al-Bayt (AS)

Access to water was restricted from Imam Hussain’s camp, intensifying the suffering. This demonstrates that restricting believers’ access to the essential resources they need has long been a method employed by the tyrants of every age. Weaponizing basic needs is condemned in Islamic ethics. Holy Quran says:

وَلَا تَعْتَدُوا إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمُعْتَدِينَ

“Do not transgress; indeed, Allah does not love transgressors.” (Qur’an 2:190)

Message for Today: Remain steadfast and patient when confronted with the restrictions and pressures imposed by oppressors and those who seek to undermine Islam.

6th Muharram: Passing of Sayyid al-Radi (RA)

Sayyid al-Radi, compiler of Nahj al-Balagha, passed away on 06th Muharram. His work preserved sermons and sayings of Imam Ali (AS), shaping Islamic intellectual heritage.

Message for Today: Scholarship is a lasting form of charity.

7th Muharram: Prophethood of Musa (AS)

Prophet Musa (AS) received divine commissioning at Mount Sinai. This marked the beginning of his mission to Pharaoh.

Message for Today: True leadership – in any position and context – is rooted in obedience to God.

27 Khordad / 17 June: Day of Enjoining Good and Forbidding Evil

This day highlights the Islamic principle of amr bil ma’ruf wa nahi ‘anil munkar. It emphasises communal responsibility for moral wellbeing. This has a strong Qur’anic foundation:

كُنْتُمْ خَيْرَ أُمَّةٍ أُخْرِجَتْ لِلنَّاسِ تَأْمُرُونَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَتَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ

“You are the best community brought forth for mankind: you enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong.” (Qur’an 3:110)

Message for Today: Ethical silence in society enables corruption. Faith requires active moral engagement.

31 Khordad / 21 June: Martyrdom of Dr Mostafa Chamran

Dr Mostafa Chamran, an Iranian scientist, commander, and politician, was martyred during the Iran–Iraq conflict. He is remembered for combining scientific excellence with spiritual conviction.

Message for Today: True success lies in serving others, even at personal cost.
