Hadith Of The Week – Volume 03 Issue 15
The necessity of reflecting worship and faith in one’s behaviour and practical life: Lessons from Imam Ja‘far al-Sadiq (peace be upon him)
Introduction & Occasion of Reflecting on This Hadith
The 25th of Shawwal marks the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq in the year 148 AH. On this solemn occasion, we reflect on one of his profound teachings that highlights essential moral qualities for a sincere believer:
امام الصادق (ع): «ثَلاثٌ مَنْ كُنَّ فيهِ فَهُوَ مُنافِقٌ وَاِنْ صامَ وَ صَلّى: مَنْ اِذا حَدَّثَ كَذِبَ وَ اِذا وَعَدَ اَخْلَفَ وَ اِذَا ائْتُمِنَ خانَ»
Imam Sadeq (as): “Three qualities, whoever possesses them is a hypocrite, even if he fasts and prays: when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a promise, he breaks it; and when he is entrusted, he betrays that trust.” (Tuhaf al-‘Uqul, p. 229)
Educational Messages from the Hadith For Teenagers and Young Adults
- Let Your Worship Transform You
Worship is valuable, specially when it leads to real positive change in your behaviour.
Practical Challenge: After each act of worship, choose one habit to improve and actively work on it that day.
- Look at Actions, Not Appearances
A person’s behaviour reflects their true character more than their outward appearance.
Practical Challenge: Focus on one person’s actions today and assess them based on their conduct, not their image.
- Check Your Character Regularly
True faith is built on honesty, keeping promises, and protecting others’ trust.
Practical Challenge: Each day and week, reflect on these three qualities – honesty, reliability, and trustworthiness – and identify one thing to improve.
- Be Real, Not Fake
Authenticity means your words and actions match.
Practical Challenge: Before posting or speaking, ask yourself: “Is this truly me, or am I pretending?”
- Speak the Truth Always
Being honest builds strong friendships and respect.
Practical Challenge: For one week, avoid even “small lies” and reflect each evening on your honesty.
- Keep Your Promises
Even simple promises matter and shape your character.
Practical Challenge: Make one small promise daily (e.g., finishing a task) and ensure you complete it.
- For Parents
- Introduce Your Children to the Wisdom of Ahl al-Bayt
The teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt can illuminate hearts and bring greater meaning and joy to family life.
Practical Challenge: Share one saying or story from the Ahl al-Bayt each week and discuss how to apply it at home.
- Teach Them to Judge by Behaviour, Not Appearance
Children need to learn that true character is shown through actions, not only outward appearances.
Practical Challenge: Use real-life examples to help your children reflect on people’s behaviour rather than how they look.
- Make Home a Safe Place for Honesty
Children should feel secure telling the truth.
Practical Challenge: Respond calmly when your child admits a mistake.
- Show Practical Faith in Daily Life
Faith is not only in prayer, but in everyday actions.
Practical Challenge: Model these three qualities daily and openly acknowledge when you improve or correct your own behaviour.
- Correct Behaviour with Wisdom
Guide children gently when they lie or break trust.
Practical Challenge: Discuss why honesty matters instead of only punishing wrongdoing.
- For Imams and Teachers
- Teach the Foundations of Trust
Trust and trustworthiness are essential for strong communities, and must be clearly explained and nurtured.
Practical Challenge: Dedicate a session to explaining honesty, keeping promises, and safeguarding trust as key pillars of being trustworthy.
- Explain the Reality of Hypocrisy
Hypocrisy is a hidden danger that harms both individuals and communities, often more deeply than disbelief.
Practical Challenge: Help your audience identify traits of hypocrisy and reflect on how to avoid them in daily life.
- Connect Worship to Behaviour
Acts of worship should shape character and be visible in everyday actions and interactions.
Practical Challenge: Provide one practical example each week of how prayer or fasting can lead to a specific positive behaviour change.
- Be Honest About What You Know
Admitting “I don’t know” is better than giving wrong information.
Practical Challenge: When unsure, model honesty by researching the answer with your students.
- Emphasise Character Over Ritual Alone
Teach that ethics are as important as worship. Moral principles can help enhance the impact of worship in improving human behaviour.
Practical Challenge: Include one moral lesson in every class or sermon.
- Encourage Accountability
Help others take responsibility for their actions.
Practical Challenge: Create opportunities for self-reflection in lessons or discussions.
