The Past as a Compass: Navigating Modern Life with Sacred Memory

Introduction

Each passing week offers an opportunity to reconnect with our rich heritage and rediscover guidance for contemporary life. By reflecting on significant moments and figures, we strengthen our role as educators, leaders, and servants of our communities.

21 Shawwal: The Conquest of Al-Andalus (92 AH)

The Muslim conquest of Al-Andalus began in 92 AH under the leadership of Ṭāriq ibn Ziyād, leading to the establishment of a vibrant Islamic civilisation in the Iberian Peninsula. This era became renowned for its contributions to science, philosophy, and intercultural exchange.

This event highlights the Islamic emphasis on knowledge, justice, and coexistence with others. The success of Al-Andalus reflects a commitment to wisdom and ethical conduct in engaging diverse societies. Quran teaches us that:

ادْعُ إِلِىٰ سَبِيلِ رَبِّكَ بِالْحِكْمَةِ وَالْمَوْعِظَةِ الْحَسَنَةِ”

“Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction” (Qur’an 16:125).

Message for Today: Muslims today should embody wisdom, learning, and constructive engagement with wider society.

25 Shawwal:The Martyrdom of Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣādiq (148 AH)

Imam Ja‘far al-Ṣādiq (peace be upon him), the sixth Imam, was martyred in 148 AH. He was a leading scholar of his time, contributing greatly to Islamic jurisprudence, theology, and the transmission of knowledge.

His life reminds us of the centrality of knowledge, integrity, and patience in the face of oppression. He taught that true faith is reflected in both character and action.

From him is narrated:

(اصول کافی، ج ۲، ص ۷۸)“كُونُوا دُعَاةً لِلنَّاسِ بِغَيْرِ أَلْسِنَتِكُمْ

“Be callers to the people without your tongues (i.e., through your actions).”

Message for Today: Let our conduct reflect our beliefs, becoming living examples of Islamic values in society.

25 Farvardin: Commemoration of ‘Aṭṭār of Nishapur

Farīd al-Dīn ‘Aṭṭār, the great Persian poet and mystic, is commemorated on this day for his profound literary and spiritual contributions. His works, such as The Conference of the Birds, explore the journey of the soul towards divine truth. Perhaps the best description of Attar’s stature is the famous saying of Rumi, who considered himself a student of his path:

“Attar travelled through the seven cities of love, while we are still at the bend of a single alley.”

Aṭṭār’s writings emphasise self-purification, sincerity, and the pursuit of divine lovevalues deeply rooted in Islamic spirituality. His legacy reminds us of the importance of inner transformation alongside outward practice.

The Qur’an states:

قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَنْ زَكَّاهَا

“He has succeeded who purifies it (the soul)” (Qur’an 91:9).

Message for Today: True success lies in refining the soul and deepening our connection with Allah.

Last word:

These occasions call us to balance action with reflection, knowledge with sincerity, and history with present responsibility. By drawing upon our tradition, we equip ourselvesand those we teachto navigate modern challenges with faith and wisdom.
