Awakening in the Depth of the Night, when a Single Moment Changes a Lifetime

The night had gently draped its silence over the city. A deep stillness prevailed broken only now and then by the faint sound of footsteps or a passing breeze. At such an hour, most people were fast asleep, wrapped in the comfort of rest, reluctant to part with it.

On one such night, a great scholar and spiritual master, Shaykh Ja’far Kashif al-Ghita, rose from his bed. He performed his ablution, stood in prayer, and turned his heart toward the heavens. But this time, he did not confine the moment to himself.

He walked to his young son’s room; a youth still held in the warmth of sleep and gently called out: “Wake up. Tonight, let us go together to the shrine and pray.” Half-awake, the young man replied with hesitation: “You go ahead… I’ll come later.”

But the father did not yield.  “No,” he said calmly. “I will wait here. Get ready, we will go together.”

Reluctantly, the young man rose. He made ablution, and together they stepped into the quiet embrace of the night. The streets were still, yet there was a subtle transformation in the air, as if each step distanced them from the world and drew them closer to something higher.

As they approached the entrance of the sacred courtyard, a scene caught the father’s attention. A poor man sat there, in the cold of the night, stretching out his hand in need.

The Shaykh paused. He looked at the man, then turned to his son and asked, “Why do you think this man is sitting here at such an hour?” “To beg,” the son replied. “And how much do you think he earns?” the father continued. The young man mentioned a small, insignificant amount.

Then came a question, not merely spoken, but deeply felt: “My son, reflect for a moment. This man has abandoned his sleep and comfort, sitting here in the middle of the night, all for the hope of gaining a small and uncertain amount from people. Do you not trust the promises of God as much as this man trusts people?” Then he reminded him of a divine truth: « فَلاَ تَعْلَمُ نفسٌ ما أخفی لهم من قرَّة أعیُنٍ؛ “No soul knows what joy is hidden for them, rewards that will delight their eyes.”

The words were simple, but they struck with the force of awakening.

In that moment, the young man did not merely wake from sleep; he awakened from a deeper heedlessness.

It is said that from that night onward, his life changed. Rising before dawn was no longer a burden, it became a devotion, even a longing. Until the end of his life, he never abandoned the night prayer. For he had come to understand this was not merely about an act of worship, it was about trusting God.

Three Key Lessons from This Experience

  1. The Power of Real-Life Moments

An effective preacher draws profound truths from ordinary situations. The Shaykh transformed a simple scene into a gateway to spiritual awakening.

  1. The Impact of Meaningful Comparison

Contrasting worldly striving with trust in divine reward awakens the mind and heart. This method echoes a powerful pedagogical approach found in the Qur’an.

  1. Connecting Behaviour to Belief

The issue was not merely the son’s reluctance to wake; it was a weakness in trusting God’s promise. True transformation begins when belief is strengthened.
