Sincere Generosity: Lessons from the Charity of Imam Ali (Peace Be Upon Him)

Introduction & Occasion of reflecting on These Verses

The twenty-first of Ramadan marks the martyrdom anniversary of Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him) in the year 40 AH. On this solemn occasion, we reflect on verses 8 and 9 of Surah Al‑Insan, which according to many classical commentaries were revealed about the generosity and sincerity of Imam Ali and his family when they gave their food to the needy despite their own hardship:

وَيُطْعِمُونَ الطَّعَامَ عَلَى حُبِّهِ مِسْكِينًا وَيَتِيمًا وَأَسِيرًا * إِنَّمَا نُطْعِمُكُمْ لِوَجْهِ اللَّهِ لَا نُرِيدُ مِنْكُمْ جَزَاءً وَلَا شُكُورًا

(سورة الإنسان، آيات ٨–٩)

“And they give food, despite their love for it, to the poor, the orphan, and the captive. [Saying], ‘We feed you only for the sake of Allah; we desire from you neither reward nor thanks.’” (Surah Al-Insan 76:8–9)

Educational Messages of the Verses for Teens and Youth

  1. Generosity Is a Sign of Real Faith

Helping others is one of the clearest ways to show that faith is alive in your heart.

Practical Challenge: This week, share something you value (time, food, or help) with someone in need.

  1. Do Everything for the Sake of Allah

These verses remind us that the believers said: “We feed you only for the sake of Allah.” This teaches that the true value of any action lies in the intention behind it. When you study, help others, pray, or show kindness, do it to please Allah rather than to gain praise from people.

Practical Challenge: Before doing one good deed each day this week, pause for a moment and say in your heart: “I am doing this for the sake of Allah.”

  1. Give Even When It Is Difficult

The verse praises those who give while they themselves need the food. True generosity sometimes requires sacrifice.

Practical Challenge: Donate a small part of your allowance or personal time to help someone less fortunate.

  1. Care for the Vulnerable in Society

The Qur’an highlights the poor, the orphan, and even the captive – people who may be forgotten by society.

Practical Challenge: Volunteer once this month in a community activity that helps vulnerable people.

  1. Do Good Without Seeking Praise

Islam teaches us to do good quietly, without expecting attention or social media recognition.

Practical Challenge: Perform one good deed anonymously this week.

Educational Messages of the Verses for Parents

  1. Teach Generosity Through Example

Children learn generosity when they see it practised by their parents.

Practical Challenge: Involve your children in preparing food or donations for someone in need this month.

  1. Make Compassion a Family Value

The Qur’anic example shows that charity was a family act, not an individual one.

Practical Challenge: Choose one small family charity project during Ramadan.

  1. Help Children Understand Sincere Intentions

Teach your children that the best deeds are done for Allah, not for recognition.

Practical Challenge: After doing a good deed as a family, remind everyone that the reward comes from Allah alone.

  1. Raise Children Who Notice Others’ Needs

Modern life can make families self-focused; parents should help children develop social awareness.

Practical Challenge: Encourage your child to identify someone in their school or community who may need help.

  1. Avoid Excessive Comfort in Family Life

The spirit of these verses teaches generosity and awareness of others’ needs. If a family becomes too accustomed to comfort and luxury, it may gradually lose sensitivity toward the struggles of the poor, the orphan, and the vulnerable.

Practical Challenge: This week, choose one simple lifestyle decision as a family (such as reducing an unnecessary expense) and use the saved amount to help someone in need.

  1. Teach the Value of Purposeful Hardship

A meaningful and balanced life is not built only on comfort. Sometimes experiencing small difficulties helps children develop patience, empathy, and resilience. When hardships are understood with purpose and faith, they can strengthen character and compassion.

Practical Challenge: Create one opportunity this month for your children to experience serving others directly – such as volunteering, helping a struggling family, or participating in a charity activity.

Educational Messages of the Verses for Imams, Teachers, and Chaplains

  1. Promote Practical Charity in the Community

These verses emphasise feeding and supporting people in need as a core Islamic practice.

Practical Challenge: Organise a mosque or school food drive during Ramadan.

  1. Highlight the Social Justice Dimension of Islam

The Qur’an links faith directly with caring for the vulnerable.

Practical Challenge: Initiate one community project supporting refugees, orphans, or disadvantaged families.

  1. Use the Example of Imam Ali in Teaching Ethics

Imam Ali’s life provides powerful examples of humility, justice, and compassion.

Practical Challenge: Include one story of his generosity in your next sermon or lesson.

  1. Encourage Hidden Acts of Kindness

Communities should be reminded that the most sincere charity is often done quietly.

Practical Challenge: Encourage congregants to commit to one anonymous act of charity during Ramadan.
