Reflections on Significant Islamic Events: Lessons for Today

Introduction

In this week’s edition, we delve into the profound historical events that have shaped our faith and continue to offer invaluable lessons for contemporary society. From the martyrdom of Imam Musa al-Kazim (a) to the passing of Abu Talib and Allama Muhammad Taqi Ja’fari, the Prophet Muhammad’s (s) commissioning as a messenger of Allah, and the international day of education each milestone serves as a source of spiritual, ethical, and practical inspiration.

By reflecting on these significant occasions, we aim to draw wisdom from the lives of our revered figures and apply their teachings to empower and enlighten our communities.

26th January 2025 – 25th Rajab: Martyrdom of Imam al-Kazim (a)

Imam Musa al-Kazim (a), the seventh Shia Imam, was martyred in 183 AH after enduring years of unjust imprisonment by the Abbasid rulers. Renowned for his unparalleled patience and devotion, he exemplified resistance against tyranny while maintaining profound spiritual strength. His life was a beacon of moral clarity during a time of political corruption. He is a great example of this verse of Holy Quran which says:

إِنَّ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ كَانَتْ لَهُمْ جَنَّاتُ الْفِرْدَوْسِ نُزُلًا

“Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds – they will have the Gardens of Paradise as a lodging.” (Quran 18:107)

One of the teachings of Imam al-Kazim is:

لَيْسَ مِنَّا مَنْ لَمْ يُحَاسِبْ نَفْسَهُ فِي كُلِّ يَوْمٍ فَإِنْ عَمِلَ حَسَناً اِسْتَزَادَ اَللَّهَ وَ إِنْ عَمِلَ سَيِّئاً اِسْتَغْفَرَ اَللَّهَ مِنْهُ وَ تَابَ إِلَيْهِ

“He is not from us who does not take account of himself every day. If he performs a good deed, he should ask Allah for more of it, and if he commits a bad deed, he should seek forgiveness from Allah and repent to Him.” (Al-Kafi, Volume 2, Page 453)

The educational messages of this Hadith for teens and youth, parents, and Imams are outlined in the ‘Hadith of the Week’ section of this issue.

Message for Today: For contemporary scholars, the Imam’s life serves as an example of how to address moral and societal challenges with patience and resolve. In today’s context, this might mean resisting the lure of complacency or speaking out against injustice, despite potential personal costs. In today’s world, we must strive to embody these virtues, promoting justice and compassion in our communities.

27th January 2025 – 26th Rajab: Demise of Abu Talib

Abu Talib, the uncle and protector of the Prophet Muhammad (s), played an indispensable role in the early years of Islam. His unwavering support for the Prophet (s) went beyond familial loyalty; he believed in the truth and integrity of the Prophet’s mission. Despite the immense societal pressure and personal sacrifices he faced, Abu Talib’s commitment to justice and truth never wavered.

The life of Abu Talib teaches us that defending the truth is a moral duty, irrespective of who advocates for it. His example reminds us that loyalty to the truth should supersede personal or familial bonds. Furthermore, his sacrifices demonstrate that standing for righteousness often comes with a price. Abu Talib’s life encourages us to be prepared to face challenges and endure hardships when upholding justice.

Message for Today: For contemporary leaders and scholars, the lessons of Abu Talib’s life are twofold. First, we must defend the truth regardless of its source—whether it comes from a relative or a stranger. Justice and morality should guide our actions above all else. Second, we must accept that defending the truth often involves sacrifices. Just as Abu Talib faced hardships to protect the Prophet (s), today’s leaders must be ready to endure challenges to uphold justice and truth.

Demise of Allama Muhammad Taqi Ja’fari (1998)

Allama Muhammad Taqi Ja’fari, a luminary of modern Islamic scholarship, dedicated his life to harmonising Islamic principles with contemporary intellectual and philosophical discourse. His works enriched Islamic thought, making it accessible to both traditional and modern audiences. His passing created a profound void in the Islamic world, highlighting the unique role of scholars in shaping the intellectual and spiritual fabric of society.

Imam Sadiq (a) said:

وَإِذَا مَاتَ الْعَالِمُ ثُلِمَ فِيْ الْإِسْلَامِ ثُلْمَةٌ لَا يَسُدُهَا شَيْءٌ إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ

“When a scholar dies, a void is created in Islam that nothing can fill until the Day of Resurrection.” (Bohar al-Anwar, 2, 43)

Message for Today: For scholars, Allama Ja’fari’s approach highlights the importance of remaining deeply rooted in Islamic knowledge while also addressing contemporary challenges. This balance ensures the relevance of Islamic teachings for modern generations. His life inspires us to value and invest in scholarship, recognising that the loss of a learned individual is an irreplaceable void.

28th January 2025 – 27th Rajab – Bi’that of the Prophet (s) (July 9, 610)

The Bi’that marks the commencement of Prophet Muhammad’s (s) prophethood, a pivotal moment in Islamic history. This event signifies the beginning of the revelation of the Quran and the spread of Islam.

These is one beautiful verse in Quran about prophet Muhammad (PBUH):

وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ إِلَّا رَحْمَةً لِّلْعَالَمِينَ

“We have sent you ˹O Prophet˺ only as a mercy for the whole world.” (Quran 21:107)

Message for Today: The presence of the Prophet Muhammad (s) was a source of immense goodness and mercy for all of humanity. As his followers, it is our duty to emulate his example by being sources of kindness and compassion in our own lives. Wherever we are, our actions and presence should bring benefit and relief to those around us, rather than causing any harm or distress.

In today’s world, where many face challenges and hardships, the teachings of the Prophet (s) remind us of the importance of being a positive force in our communities. By embodying the principles of mercy and compassion, we can contribute to creating a more just and harmonious society. Let us strive to be beacons of hope and support, ensuring that our conduct reflects the noble character of the Prophet (s) and brings about positive change in the lives of those we encounter.

24th January 2025 – International Day of Education

The International Day of Education is a global observance that highlights the pivotal role of education in achieving peace and sustainable development. It underscores the importance of ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education for all, as well as promoting lifelong learning opportunities.

Education holds a significant place in Islam, as it is considered a means to attain knowledge, wisdom, and moral integrity. The Quran and Hadith emphasise the importance of seeking knowledge and the transformative power it holds. This is one of profound teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) that:

طَلَبُ اَلْعِلْمِ فَرِيضَةٌ عَلَى كُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ وَ مُسْلِمَةٍ

“Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim, male and female.” (Bohar al-Anwar, 1, 177).

Message for Today: The International Day of Education reminds us of the profound impact that education can have on individuals and societies. As Muslims, we are encouraged to pursue knowledge and wisdom, not only for personal growth but also to contribute positively to our communities. By fostering a culture of learning and intellectual curiosity, we can address contemporary challenges and promote justice, peace, and prosperity.
