Responding to the Call – The Deep Significance of the Arbaeen Pilgrimage Walk

Every year, millions of feet tread the sacred path from Najaf to Karbala, marking the Arbaeen, the fortieth day following the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS). This pilgrimage is not just a walk; it is a profound response to the poignant call of Imam Hussain on the Day of Ashura:

“هل من ناصر ينصرني و هل من مغيث يغيثني”
“Is there any helper to assist me (to bring justice back to the world)? Is there any responder to respond to my call?”

The Arbaeen walk transcends time and space, symbolizing a universal movement towards justice and peace. Each step taken by the pilgrims is a testament to their commitment to the principles for which Imam Hussain (AS) stood and ultimately gave his life. This annual event embodies profound spiritual and social dimensions, with pilgrims demonstrating a collective commitment to not just remembering history but living its values.

1. Walking for Justice

The first objective of the Arbaeen walk is to establish justice across the globe. It represents a physical and spiritual stand against oppression and tyranny. Pilgrims walk in solidarity, echoing the resistance of Imam Hussain (AS) against injustice, signalling that his legacy continues to inspire those who strive for a just world.

2. Promoting Peace and Security

In a world rife with conflict and turmoil, the Arbaeen pilgrimage sends a powerful message of peace and security. This gathering, one of the largest peaceful assemblies in the world, demonstrates the strength of tranquillity over turmoil.

3. Supporting the Oppressed

Imam Hussain (AS) is a symbol of resistance against oppression. Thus, the pilgrims’ journey is a pledge to support the weak and oppressed globally. This support manifests not only in spiritual solidarity but also in raising awareness and aid for those in need.

4. Demonstrating Unity

The fourth major objective is to showcase the unity amongst believers. The diversity of the pilgrims, coming from various backgrounds and nations, highlights the unifying power of faith and shared ideals, bridging differences to form a resilient community.

5. Preparing for the Future

Lastly, this pilgrimage is an expression of readiness and support for the awaited saviour, who, as believed, will establish a universal government based on divine justice. This objective is about maintaining hope and readiness for a future that embraces the ultimate ideals of truth and equity.

Sustaining the Spirit of Arbaeen

The challenge for many is how to maintain the spirit of Arbaeen beyond the pilgrimage. The answer lies in continuous self-building and the application of justice in our individual lives and communities. Each action and decision should reflect the principles of Imam Hussain (AS), integrating the ethics of Arbaeen into daily practice.

As we move forward, let the call of Imam Hussain (AS) resonate not only during Arbaeen but as a continuous inspiration in our lives. Let us respond to his call every day, striving to create a world that mirrors the justice and peace he sacrificed so much for. Let this pilgrimage be a reminder that our journey towards a better world is on-going and that every step counts.
