2nd February 2025 – 3rd Shaban: Birth of Imam al-Husayn (a):
The birth of Imam al-Husayn (a), the beloved grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (s), is a moment to celebrate the arrival of a figure whose life became synonymous with the struggle for justice and the defence of truth. His stand at Karbala exemplifies the ultimate sacrifice in the face of tyranny, making his legacy timeless. This day reminds us to remain steadfast in our principles, even when the odds seem insurmountable, and to draw inspiration from his courage and devotion to the divine cause.
3rd February 2025 – 4th Shaban: Birth of Hazrat Abbas (a):
The birth of Hazrat Abbas (a), the valiant standard-bearer of Karbala, marks the beginning of a life dedicated to loyalty, selflessness, and unwavering faith. Known as “Bab al-Hawaij” (the Gate to Fulfilling Needs), Hazrat Abbas(a) serves as a beacon of hope and steadfastness, particularly in moments of hardship. His loyalty to Imam al-Husayn (a) and his unparalleled courage at Karbala stands as a lesson in the importance of sacrificing personal comfort for the greater good and supporting just causes with full sincerity.
4th February 2025 – 5th Shaban: Birth of Imam al-Sajjad (a):
The birth of Imam al-Sajjad (a), the fourth Imam, is a moment to reflect on a life devoted to worship, moral guidance, and the preservation of Islamic teachings after the tragedy of Karbala. Known as “Zain al-Abidin” (the adornment of worshippers), his supplications in Sahifa Sajjadiya serve as a spiritual guide for connecting with Allah and navigating life’s challenges. His resilience and quiet leadership in the aftermath of Karbala remind us of the power of steadfast faith and patience in overcoming adversity and inspiring transformation.
4th February – International Day of Human Fraternity:
The International Day of Human Fraternity is a call to recognise the shared humanity that binds us all, transcending differences of race, religion, and nationality. Rooted in Islamic teachings, the concept of fraternity (ukhuwwa) is central to building compassionate and inclusive communities. The Quran states:
“The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers. And fear Allah that you may receive mercy.” (Quran 49:10)
This day reminds us of the Prophet Muhammad’s (s) emphasis on treating all people with dignity and fostering unity, as seen in his Farewell Sermon, where he declared the equality of all human beings regardless of race or ethnicity. It challenges us to break down barriers of prejudice and division, urging Muslims to serve as ambassadors of peace, justice, and understanding.
In today’s fragmented world, observing this day through acts of kindness, dialogue, and collaboration aligns with the Islamic ethos of mutual respect and collective responsibility, as exemplified in the life and teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (s).
