Lessons from History and Faith for Our Times
Introduction
This week – 01st to 07th Oct 2025 – we reflect upon sacred anniversaries and significant global observances. Each occasion holds a unique message that can guide Muslims – especially imams and cultural leaders – in nurturing communities rooted in justice, compassion, and wisdom.
8 Rabiʿ al-Thani – Birth of Imam Hasan al-ʿAskari (peace be upon him), 232 AH
The eleventh Imam, Hasan al-ʿAskari (as), was born on this day. His short but profound life was marked by patience, trust in Allah, and guidance given to his followers despite severe restrictions. His famous saying reminds us of hope in hardship:
«مَا مِنْ بَلِيَّةٍ إِلَّا وَلِلَّهِ فِيهَا نِعْمَةٌ تُحِيطُ بِهَا»
“There is no affliction except that Allah has placed within it a blessing that encompasses it.” (Biḥār al-Anwār, 2, 320)
In today’s uncertain times, this wisdom teaches us to search for growth and blessings within every trial.
Message for Muslims Today: Cultivate resilience and hope in adversity, seeing every challenge as an opportunity for spiritual and moral growth.
10 Rabiʿ al-Thani – Passing of Lady Fāṭimah al-Maʿṣūmah (peace be upon her), 201 AH
Lady Fāṭimah al-Maʿṣūmah (sa) was the noble sister of Imam ʿAlī al-Riḍā (as) and is remembered for her devotion, knowledge, and piety. Her shrine in Qom remains a centre of learning and spirituality. She represents the dignity and contribution of women in Islam. She is a noble example of what Qur’an says that:
«إِنَّ أَكْرَمَكُمْ عِندَ اللَّهِ أَتْقَاكُمْ»
“Indeed, the most honoured of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you.” (Qur’an 49:13)
Her life inspires Muslims to recognise the intellectual and spiritual role of women in strengthening families and communities.
Message for Muslims Today: Honour and empower Muslim women as vital contributors to faith, family, and society.
14 Rabiʿ al-Thani – Uprising of al-Mukhtār al-Thaqafī, 66 AH
Al-Mukhtār rose in Kufa seeking justice for the martyrdom of Imam Husayn (as). His movement reflected the enduring Islamic call to resist oppression and stand for truth. His movement was aligned with Qur’an warning that:
«وَلَا تَرْكَنُوا إِلَى الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا فَتَمَسَّكُمُ النَّارُ»
“And do not incline towards those who have wronged, lest the Fire should touch you.” (Qur’an 11:113)
This anniversary reminds us that neutrality in the face of injustice is complicity, and Muslims must work for justice wherever they live.
Message for Muslims Today: Take an ethical stand against injustice in society; whether through advocacy, education, or service.
1 October – International Day of Older Persons
This global observance honours the dignity and contributions of the elderly in societies. Islam has always emphasised respect, service, and compassion towards parents and elders. The Prophet (PBUH) said:
«لَيْسَ مِنَّا مَنْ لَمْ يُوَقِّرْ كَبِيرَنَا وَيَرْحَمْ صَغِيرَنَا»
“He is not of us who does not honour our elders and show mercy to our young.” (Nozhat-o-Naazer, 1, 26)
In an age when elders are often neglected, Islam calls for valuing their wisdom and caring for them with love.
Message for Muslims Today: Strengthen intergenerational bonds by respecting, serving, and learning from elders in your communities.
