Reflections on the 15th of Rajab: Lessons from Islamic History for Today

Introduction

The Islamic calendar is a profound tapestry of events that offer lessons, values, and guidance for believers in every era. The 15th of Rajab holds significant events that resonate deeply with the Islamic faith and heritage. As we reflect on these occasions, we find insights to enhance our personal spirituality and our collective role as Muslim leaders in empowering and guiding our communities.

This week’s issue delves into three major events: the demise of Lady Zaynab (S.A.), the change of the Qibla, and the end of the sanction in Shi‘b Abi Talib. Each event carries a timeless message, underscored by Qur’anic verses and Prophetic traditions, urging us to reflect on our duties and the responsibilities we shoulder in these challenging times.

The Demise of Lady Zaynab (S.A.)

Lady Zaynab (S.A.), the granddaughter of the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), was a beacon of strength, eloquence, and steadfast faith. Her demise on the 15th of Rajab reminds us of her unmatched contribution to preserving the legacy of Karbala and embodying the principles of truth and justice.

“Indeed, those who have said, ‘Our Lord is Allah’ and then remained steadfast – the angels will descend upon them, saying, ‘Do not fear and do not grieve but receive good tidings of Paradise, which you were promised.'” (Surah Fussilat, 41:30)

Lady Zaynab’s life exemplifies this verse as she remained steadfast in the face of unimaginable trials, inspiring countless generations.

Message for Today:

For the contemporary Muslims, Lady Zaynab’s (S.A.) legacy is a call to uphold truth, defend justice, and support the oppressed. Her unwavering resolve in the aftermath of Karbala teaches us to find strength in faith and carry the torch of resilience and activism.

The Change of the Qibla

The change of the Qibla from Jerusalem to the Kaaba in Mecca, a pivotal event in Islamic history, also occurred on the 15th of Rajab. This shift symbolised the completion of the distinct identity of the Muslim Ummah.

“We have certainly seen the turning of your face, [O Mohammad], toward the heaven, and We will surely turn you to a Qibla with which you will be pleased. So turn your face toward al-Masjid al-Haram. And wherever you [believers] are, turn your faces toward it.” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:144)

This event was a divine directive, affirming the independence of Islam while uniting the Muslim Ummah under a shared direction in worship.

Message for Today:

For modern Muslim leaders, the change of the Qibla symbolises adaptability and submission to Allah’s commands. It is a reminder to emphasise unity among the Muslim community despite differences in background, culture, or sect.

Exit from the Sanction in Shi‘b Abi Talib

The exit of the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) and Banu Hashim from the boycott in Shi‘b Abi Talib marked the end of one of the most testing periods of early Islamic history. For three years, they endured social, economic, and physical hardships imposed by the Quraysh. The believers’ steadfastness, trust in Allah, and communal support eventually led to their freedom.

In Surah Al-Anfal, verse 26, Allah reminds the believers of their past struggles to encourage gratitude for their present blessings.

“And remember when you were few and oppressed in the land, fearing that people might abduct you; then He sheltered you, supported you with His help, and provided you with good things so that you might be grateful.” (Surah Al-Anfal, 8:26)

The messages of this verse which are deeply relevant for modern Muslims are outlined and discussed in the ‘Ayah of the Week’ section.

Message for Today:

This event is a powerful reminder for today’s leaders to persevere during times of hardship and to inspire their communities to remain steadfast in faith. It also emphasises the importance of collective support during crises, ensuring no one is left behind.
