Accountability, Family, Moral Renewal & Creativity in Our Time

Introduction

As we enter a new week marked by diverse spiritual, cultural, and global occasions, we are invited to reflect on how timeless Islamic teachings can guide us in navigating modern challenges. This issue highlights key moments that speak to human responsibility, dignity, wisdom, and creativity.

1st of Dhu al-Qa‘dah: The Descent of Prophet Adam (peace be upon him)

According to Islamic narrations, this day marks the descent of Prophet Adam (peace be upon him) from Paradise to earth. The Noble Qur’an narrates that when Prophet Adam (peace be upon him), after committing his sin, repented to God and his repentance was accepted, God said to him:

«قُلْنَا اهْبِطُوا مِنْهَا جَمِيعًا فَإِمَّا يَأْتِيَنَّكُمْ مِنِّي هُدًى فَمَنْ تَبِعَ هُدَايَ فَلَا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ»

“We said, ‘Descend from it, all of you. And when guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows My guidance – there will be no fear upon them, nor will they grieve.”

(Holy Quran, 2:38)

Message for Today:

Whenever you commit a sin or make a mistake, try to learn from it, do not persist in it, and do not exceed limits. This means you’re ACCOUNTABLE.

1st of Dhu al-Qa‘dah: Birth of Lady Ma‘sūmah (peace be upon her) – Girls’ Day (173 AH)

Lady Fatimah al-Ma‘sūmah (peace be upon her), the noble daughter of Imam Musa al-Kazim (peace be upon him), was born in 173 AH. She is revered for her knowledge, piety, and spiritual status.

This occasion highlights the dignity and value of girls in Islam, challenging cultural biases that persist in some societies. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

«فَاِنَّهُ مَن فَرَّحَ اِبنَتَهُ فَكَاَنَّما اَعَتَقَ رَقَبَةً مِن وُلدِ اِسماعيلَ»

“Whoever brings joy to his daughter, it is as if he has freed a slave from the descendants of Ishmael.”

(Makarim al-Akhlaq, p. 54)

At a time when many young girls face identity pressures and social challenges, Islam calls for honour, compassion, and active care.

Message for Today:

Honouring and uplifting girls in family is not optional – it is a path to spiritual excellence.

1st of Ordibehesht: Commemoration Day of Sa‘di

This day marks the commemoration of Sa‘di of Shiraz, the renowned Persian poet of the 13th century, whose works such as Gulistan and Bustan have shaped ethical and literary thought for centuries.

Sa‘di’s poetry, deeply rooted in Islamic ethics, emphasises human unity, compassion, and moral responsibility. His famous verse“Human beings are members of one body”resonates strongly in today’s fragmented world. His work reflects Qur’anic values of empathy and social justice.

Message for Today:

Wisdom and literature can be powerful tools for nurturing اخلاق (ethics) and human connection.

21st April: World Creativity and Innovation Day

Established by the United Nations, this day promotes creative thinking and innovation as essential tools for sustainable development and problem-solving in the modern world.

Islam encourages reflection, creativity, and intellectual effort as part of human responsibility. In an era of rapid change, creativity grounded in ethical values can lead to meaningful and responsible innovation.

Message for Today:

Creativity that is devoid of spirituality and ethics is toxic creativity.

Last words:

This week’s occasions collectively remind us that human life is a journey of growth, dignity, reflection, and creativity. From the descent of Adam to the honouring of daughters, from the wisdom of Sa‘di to the call for innovation, Islam offers a holistic framework for living with purpose and integrity. It is through connecting these timeless teachings to our present realities that we can empower ourselves and our communities to lead more ethical, balanced, and meaningful lives.
