Imam Ḥasan’s Generosity – A Lesson in Selflessness

Imam Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī (peace be upon him), the elder grandson of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family), was known not only for his wisdom but also for his unmatched generosity. It is narrated that the Imam gave away his entire wealth on more than one occasion, trusting fully in Allah’s provision.

One day, a poor man approached the Imam while he was seated among companions. The man asked for help. Before answering, Imam Ḥasan turned to those around him and asked: “What is the best act in this world?” They replied with various answers, but the Imam said: “The best act is to bring joy to the heart of a believer.”

He then excused himself, went inside his home, and returned with a heavy bag of coins. Placing it in the man’s hands, he said: “Take this, and forgive me, for what little I give is small compared to your dignity.” The man was overwhelmed, and tears filled his eyes as he prayed for the Imam.

On another occasion, when asked why he gave so freely, Imam Ḥasan explained: “I feel ashamed before Allah to refuse a beggar, for I myself am a beggar at His door.”

His generosity was not only material. When insulted harshly by an enemy, Imam Ḥasan responded with kindness and an invitation to share food. The man, astonished, broke down in regret and became one of his devoted supporters.

These stories remind us that leadership is not only about politics and treaties but also about embodying the Qur’anic spirit of mercy, patience, and giving. Imam Ḥasan’s open hand and open heart inspire us to see generosity as a way of life, rooted in dignity and trust in Allah.
