About the Author:
The author of Sharā’i’ al-Islām fī masā’il al-ḥalāl wa l-ḥarām is Abu al-Qāsim Najm al-Dīn Ja’far ibn al-Ḥasan al-Hudhālī, better known as al-Muḥaqqiq al-Ḥillī or al-Muḥaqqiq al-Awwal (d. 1277 CE). He was a great Shi’a jurist and scholar of the seventh/thirteenth century, considered one of the most prominent legal minds of his time, with the epithet “al-Muḥaqqiq” (the investigator/researcher) often referring to him alone in later jurisprudential works. He was born in what is now Iraq and played a key role in shaping Shi’a legal studies, with many great scholars, including al-‘Allāmah al-Ḥillī, being among his students.
About the Book:
Sharā’i’ al-Islām fī masā’il al-ḥalāl wa l-ḥarām (Laws of Islam concerning lawful and unlawful issues) is a foundational and comprehensive work in Imamiyya Shi’a jurisprudence (Fiqh), encompassing over 12,000 legal problems across all areas of Islamic law. The book is renowned for its clear writing, precision, brevity, and meticulous organisation, presenting legal issues systematically by first listing the obligatory (wajib), then the recommended (mustahab), detestable (makruh), and finally the forbidden (haram) actions. Due to these features, Sharā’i’ has been a central text and primary textbook in Shi’a theological schools (Hawza ’Ilmiyya) for over 750 years, spawning countless commentaries, expositions, and glosses by subsequent scholars.
