The Infant Who Spoke: A Miracle of Maryam and Jesus (peace be upon them)
Maryam (Mary, peace be upon him), a woman of unparalleled devotion and purity, was chosen by Allah for a mission beyond human comprehension. By His divine command, she conceived a child without any human intervention. This extraordinary miracle was a testament to Allah’s limitless power, yet it brought Maryam both immense joy and deep apprehension. She feared the judgment, whispers, and harsh accusations of her people. Despite these fears, she placed her unwavering trust in Allah, knowing that His plan was just and wise.
In the solitude of the desert, far from the eyes of the world, Maryam gave birth to her son, Jesus (ʿĪsā, peace be upon him). The experience was both miraculous and humbling, but it left her physically and emotionally exhausted. She worried about how she would face her people, who would inevitably judge her based on appearances without understanding the divine truth. In this moment of vulnerability, Allah’s mercy enveloped her. He reassured her, instructing her to eat from the ripe dates of the palm tree and drink from the refreshing stream nearby. These provisions restored her strength and calmed her heart.
Then came a unique command: Allah instructed Maryam to remain silent when confronted by her people. Instead of defending herself, she was to point to her infant child, allowing the miracle to unfold. Trusting in Allah’s wisdom, Maryam embraced this guidance, even though it defied conventional understanding.
When she returned to her community, cradling her newborn, the sight of her stirred immediate shock and indignation. The people exclaimed, “O Mary! You have brought something unprecedented! Your father was not an evil man, nor was your mother unchaste!” Their accusations were sharp and wounding, aimed at tarnishing her reputation. Yet Maryam stood silent, steadfast in her faith.
Instead of answering, she pointed to her infant son. The crowd’s disbelief turned to mockery. “How can we speak to an infant in the cradle?” they scoffed. But in that moment, the newborn Jesus, with divine wisdom, broke his silence. He spoke with clarity and authority, declaring:
“Indeed, I am the servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet. He has made me blessed wherever I am and enjoined upon me prayer and charity as long as I live. He has made me dutiful to my mother and has not made me arrogant or wretched. Peace is upon me the day I was born, the day I will die, and the day I will be raised alive.”
This miraculous declaration silenced the crowd. It cleared Maryam’s name and affirmed the divine mission of Jesus. This event stands as a timeless testament to unwavering faith, divine wisdom, and Allah’s unparalleled power.
