The Anniversary of the Birth of Jesus Christ (Peace Be Upon Him): A Reflection on Imam al-Ridha’s Wisdom

On 25th December, Christians around the world commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ (peace be upon him). This day offers an opportunity for reflection not only on the life and teachings of Jesus but also on the broader messages of unity, spirituality, and morality shared by divine messengers. In Islam, Jesus is revered as one of the greatest prophets, and his life offers profound lessons for all humanity. Imam al-Ridha (peace be upon him), the eighth Imam in Shia Islam, beautifully encapsulates some of these lessons in a hadith that highlights the essence of spiritual awareness and responsibility.

“The inscription on the ring of Jesus (peace be upon him) consisted of two phrases derived from the Gospel: Blessed is the servant who is remembered for God’s sake, and woe to the servant who causes God to be forgotten because of him.”

This profound statement carries numerous messages for individuals and communities across generations, guiding us towards a life rooted in spirituality, self-awareness, and ethical responsibility. Below, we delve into the practical implications of this hadith for various groups in modern society.

Lessons for Youth and Adolescents

1. Choosing Friends Wisely

Before forming friendships, ask yourself: does this person bring me closer to God or lead me further away? A good companion encourages acts of goodness and reminds you of your spiritual and moral goals. The Qur’an emphasises the significance of good companionship:

الْأَخِلَّاءُ يَوْمَئِذٍ بَعْضُهُمْ لِبَعْضٍ عَدُوٌّ إِلَّا الْمُتَّقِينَ ﴿الزخرف، ۶۷﴾

“Close friends, that Day, will be enemies to each other, except for the righteous.” (Surah Az-Zukhruf: 43:67)

2. Being Mindful of Social Media and Digital Influence

In today’s digital world, the content we consume on social media and the groups we join heavily influence our thoughts and behaviours. Adolescents must critically evaluate whether their online interactions bring them closer to values of kindness, truth, and spirituality or push them away.

3. Reflecting on Your Own Influence

Ask yourself: are you a source of guidance or distraction for your friends? Ensure that your actions, speech, and behaviour lead others towards good deeds and remembrance of God. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) said:

خَيرُ النّاسِ أنفَعُهُم لِلنّاسِ (المعجم الأوسط، ج 6، ص 58)

“The best of people are those who bring the most benefit to others.” (Al-Mu’jam Al-Awsat: 6: 58)

Lessons for Parents

1. Monitoring Friends and Companions of Children

Parents bear the responsibility of knowing their children’s friends and ensuring they are positive influences. Parental duties extend beyond providing material needs to safeguarding the spiritual and emotional well-being of their children. The primary criterion should always be whether a friend encourages or hinders their child’s closeness to God.

2. Be a Guiding Light for Your Children Towards Allah

Parents are the first and most important companions in a child’s life. Reflect on whether your words and actions inspire your children to grow closer to Allah. Your kindness, prayer habits, Taqwa, and adherence to Islamic principles profoundly shape your child’s character.

Lessons for Religious Leaders

1. Emphasising the Importance of Companionship

Religious leaders should educate their communities about the profound impact of friends and companions on an individual’s character and faith. They can share real-life examples and scriptural guidance to underline this vital message.

2. Creating Supportive Communities in the West

In environments where finding pious and like-minded companions may be challenging, particularly in Western societies, religious leaders can establish safe and inclusive spaces. These could include study groups, charity projects, or cultural activities where Muslims can interact positively and strengthen each other’s faith.

The Qur’an beautifully captures the spirit of community:

وَتَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْبِرِّ وَالتَّقْوَى وَلَا تَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْإِثْمِ وَالْعُدْوَانِ وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ شَدِيدُ الْعِقَابِ ﴿المائده، ۲﴾

“And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.” (Surah Al-Ma’idah: 5:2)
