Fatwa Panel of the Week – Volume02 Issue39
Obligatory Acts of Prayer
According to the fatwas of the Grand Religious Authorities: Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei, Ayatollah Sistani, and Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi (may Allah prolong their blessings):
Qirā’ah (Recitation in Prayer) -(Part three)
Ayatollah Khamenei | Ayatollah Sistani | Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi |
---|---|---|
1. Saying the Tasbīḥāt al-Arbaʿah once in the third and fourth rakʿah of prayers — that is, “Subḥānallāh, wal-ḥamdu lillāh, wa lā ilāha illallāh, wallāhu akbar” — is sufficient, although it is recommended as a precaution to say it three times. Alternatively, one may recite Sūrat al-Ḥamd (al-Fātiḥa) instead of this dhikr. 2. If someone knows they have recited the Tasbīḥāt al-Arbaʿah but is unsure of the number of times, nothing is obligatory upon them. However, if they have not yet gone into rukūʿ, they may assume the minimum and repeat it until they are certain it has been said three times. 3. If a person is accustomed to reciting the Tasbīḥāt al-Arbaʿah in the third and fourth rakʿahs, and they intend to recite Sūrat al-Ḥamd instead but forgetfully recite the Tasbīḥāt out of habit, their prayer is valid. The same applies if they are accustomed to reciting Sūrat al-Ḥamd and intend to recite the Tasbīḥāt but out of forgetfulness recite al-Ḥamd instead. 4. If, in the third or fourth rakʿah, one intended to recite Sūrat al-Ḥamd but the Tasbīḥāt came to their tongue, or they intended to recite the Tasbīḥāt but al-Ḥamd came to their tongue, they must abandon what they started and recite either al-Ḥamd or the Tasbīḥāt again from the beginning. |
1. In the third and fourth rakʿah of prayer, one may recite only Sūrat al-Ḥamd, or say the Tasbīḥāt al-Arbaʿah once — that is, say once: “Subḥānallāh, wal-ḥamdu lillāh, wa lā ilāha illallāh, wallāhu akbar.” It is better to say it three times. One may also recite al-Ḥamd in one rakʿah and the Tasbīḥāt in the other. However, it is better to recite the Tasbīḥāt in both rakʿahs. 2. Same fatwa. 3. Same fatwa. 4. If in the third or fourth rakʿah a person intended to recite al-Ḥamd but Tasbīḥāt came to their tongue, or intended to recite Tasbīḥāt but al-Ḥamd came to their tongue, and they were completely devoid of the intention of prayer — even subconsciously — then they must abandon what was said and start again by reciting either al-Ḥamd or the Tasbīḥāt. |

Ruling on Doubt Regarding the Recitation of Tasbīḥāt al-Arbaʿah in the Third or Fourth Rakʿah
Ayatollah Khamenei | Ayatollah Sistani | Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi |
---|---|---|
1. If a person doubts while standing in the third or fourth rakʿah whether they have recited Sūrat al-Ḥamd or the Tasbīḥāt, they must recite either the Ḥamd or the Tasbīḥāt. However, if the doubt occurs while reciting the recommended istighfār (seeking forgiveness) before going into rukūʿ, then it is not necessary to recite it. 2. If the doubt arises during the rukūʿ of the third or fourth rakʿah as to whether the Ḥamd or Tasbīḥāt was recited, one must ignore the doubt. But if the doubt occurs while going into rukūʿ, before actually reaching the position of rukūʿ, then based on obligatory precaution, one must return and recite the Ḥamd or Tasbīḥāt. |
1.If the worshipper doubts before reciting the istighfār or before bending down for rukūʿ whether they have recited Sūrat al-Ḥamd or the Tasbīḥāt, they must recite Ḥamd or Tasbīḥāt. And if the doubt occurs while reciting the istighfār or after it, then — based on obligatory precaution — they must still recite Ḥamd or Tasbīḥāt. 2. If the doubt arises during the rukūʿ of the third or fourth rakʿah, or while going into rukūʿ, regarding whether they recited Ḥamd or Tasbīḥāt, then they must ignore the doubt. |
