Guiding Light from Our Heritage for Today’s Challenges
Introduction
As we step into another week filled with profound Islamic anniversaries and a global commemoration, we are reminded that history and revelation are not distant memories but living guides for our decisions today. Each occasion offers a mirror for our time, helping Muslim leaders and educators cultivate wisdom, resilience, and ethical clarity in their communities.
17 Rabi‘ al-Awwal: Birth of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)
The Messenger of Allah was born in the Year of the Elephant, marking the arrival of mercy and guidance for humanity. In an age of division, his universal message of compassion and justice remains crucial. The Qur’an declares:
وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ إِلَّا رَحْمَةً لِّلْعَالَمِينَ (الأنبياء، 107)
“We have not sent you, except as a mercy to the worlds.” (21:107)
The Message of this Event: Let the Prophet’s example of mercy shape interfaith dialogue and social engagement.
17 Rabi‘ al-Awwal: Birth of Imam Ja‘far al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) – 83 AH
Imam al-Sadiq, the great scholar of Ahl al-Bayt, laid the foundations of Islamic sciences and exemplified unity and wisdom. His teachings remind us that true faith is perfected when directed to Allah alone:
الإِمَامُ الصَّادِقُ (ع): مَنْ أَحَبَّ لِلَّهِ وَ أَبْغَضَ لِلَّهِ وَ أَعْطَى لِلَّهِ وَ مَنَعَ لِلَّهِ فَهُوَ مِمَّنْ يَكْمُلُ إِيمَانُهُ
“Whoever loves for Allah, hates for Allah, gives for Allah, and withholds for Allah – his faith is complete.” (Bihār al-Anwār, vol. 33, p. 372)
The Message of this Event: Build a life of integrity where every act, big or small, is aligned with pleasing Allah.
22 Rabi‘ al-Awwal: The Expedition of Banu Nadir
The Prophet (peace be upon him) and the early Muslims faced betrayal when some of the Jewish tribe of Banu Nadir conspired to kill him. What makes this event especially significant is that certain hypocrites of Medina encouraged and supported them. The Qur’an vividly likens such hypocrites to Satan, who abandons those he deceives:
كَمَثَلِ الشَّيْطَانِ إِذْ قَالَ لِلْإِنْسَانِ اكْفُرْ فَلَمَّا كَفَرَ قَالَ إِنِّي بَرِيءٌ مِنْكَ (الحشر، 16)
“[They are] like Satan when he says to man: ‘Disbelieve.’ But when he disbelieves, he says: ‘Indeed, I am free of you.’” (59:16)
This shows that hypocrites, like Satan, show no loyalty, deceive everyone, and show mercy to none.
The Message of this Event: Stay alert to hypocrisy and betrayal, and build communities on trust, sincerity, and transparency.
15 September: International Day of Democracy
The world reflects on democratic values such as participation, accountability, and justice. Islam encourages shura (consultation) and accountability in governance, aligning with the spirit of genuine democracy. The Qur’an emphasises:
وَأَمْرُهُمْ شُورَى بَيْنَهُمْ (الشورى، 38)
“And their affairs are decided by mutual consultation among them.” (42:38)
The Message of this Event: Participate responsibly in civic life, upholding Islamic ethics of justice, consultation, and respect for human dignity.
Concluding Reflection
Though diverse in time and context, these occasions share one message: faith is never static. From the birth of the Prophet and Imam Ja‘far al-Sadiq to the trials of Banu Nadir and the modern call for democracy, Islam teaches us to root our actions in mercy, justice, sincerity, and accountability. For Muslims, these anniversaries are reminders to live our faith as a dynamic force – one that nurtures our communities, contributes positively to wider society, and keeps Allah’s pleasure as our ultimate goal.
