Ayat Of The Week – Friday Bulletin Issue12
وَمَا أَصَابَكُم مِّن مُّصِيبَةٍ فَبِمَا كَسَبَتْ أَيْدِيكُمْ (شوری / 30)
Whatever hardship befalls you is the result of your own deeds (Al-Shura, 30).
Message for Youth and Teenagers:
Take Accountability for Your Actions: This verse reminds us that the difficulties we face are often the result of our own choices and actions. It encourages you to reflect on your decisions and behaviours, and to strive for positive actions that align with your Islamic values and beliefs. When something bad happens, instead of blaming others and playing the victim, we should take a step back and reflect on our own actions. This is a valuable opportunity to purify our hearts, beliefs, and deeds.
Opportunity for Growth and Improvement: if you tend to think about yourself and your deeds in difficult times and take the full accountability towards them, you see that hardships are not just punishments; they are opportunities for growth. Use challenges as moments to learn and improve yourself, making better choices in the future that lead to a more fulfilling and righteous path.
Message for Parents:
Teach Accountability and Reflection: This verse emphasizes the importance of accountability. Encourage your children to take responsibility for their actions and to understand that their choices can have consequences. Help them reflect on their behaviours and guide them towards making better decisions.
Lead by Example: As parents, it’s important to model the behaviour you wish to see in your children. Show them how to handle mistakes with humility and how to learn from setbacks. Your actions can inspire them to take responsibility for their own deeds.
Message for Mosques and Cultural Centres:
The verse from Al-Shura emphasises personal accountability and the consequences of one’s actions. However, this message is not isolated; it is deeply connected with other Quranic teachings that reinforce the broader principle of cause and effect, accountability, and the inherent justice of Allah SWT. For instance, Surah Al-Zalzalah (7-8) states:
“So whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it,
And whoever does an atom’s weight of evil will see it.”
This passage complements and deepens the understanding of accountability presented in Al-Shura, 30. It illustrates that every action, no matter how small, is significant and will be accounted for. Together, these verses collectively highlight that the outcomes we experience in life — whether good or bad — are tied to our actions, emphasizing both the justice and mercy of Allah SWT.
Mosque Imams can emphasise the points below:
Interconnected Guidance: Teach that the Quran is a cohesive guide, where verses are interconnected and clarify each other, offering a full understanding of Islamic teachings.
Accountability and Mercy: Highlight that all actions, big or small, have consequences, as emphasised in verses like Al-Shura, 30 and Surah Al-Zalzalah, encouraging mindfulness and the value of every good deed.
Continuous Self-Improvement: Emphasise the Quran’s message of self-improvement and accountability, showing that challenges reflect our actions and offer chances for growth.
Justice and Compassion: Demonstrate the Quran’s balanced view of justice and mercy, where every action is fairly judged, with opportunities for repentance and personal development.
Practical Application: Help communities apply the Quran’s teachings in daily life, understanding that actions have consequences, but also room for grace and improvement, fostering a balanced and proactive approach to life.
Message for Muslim Communities:
Emphasising on right actions and not only words: One key message of Al-Shura 42:30 for Muslim communities is that Allah SWT is just, and building a good community requires right actions, not just words. Our actions have a direct cause-and-effect impact on society, affecting everyone, including ourselves. Believing in this principle encourages us to be mindful and responsible for our behaviour, knowing that our deeds shape the community’s outcomes.
