Argue in the Best Way: The Qur’anic Ethic of Tolerance
Introduction
In an age marked by increasing global diversity – and, at times, painful polarisation – the Qur’an offers timeless guidance on how Muslims should interact with people of other faiths and worldviews. While Islam does not accept compromise on the core principles of faith, it calls for tolerance, respect, and dignified dialogue in human interaction.
The International Day for Tolerance (16 November) invites us to reflect on this balance; standing firm in belief while opening hearts to understanding.
“And do not argue with the People of the Book except in the best manner, except those who act unjustly among them, and say: We believe in what has been revealed to us and revealed to you; our God and your God is One, and to Him we submit.” (Surat al-‘Ankabut, 29:46)
Educational messages from this verse for teens and youth
- Speak with kindness
When discussing faith or values, avoid anger or mockery. Wisdom and respect open more hearts than harsh words.
Practical Challenge: In your next conversation about beliefs, focus on listening more than debating.
- No Tolerance for Injustice
The verse excludes “those who act unjustly” – true tolerance never means accepting oppression. Muslims must show strength and integrity by standing up against injustice, even in small daily acts of unfairness.
Practical Challenge: When you witness someone being treated unfairly – in school, online, or anywhere – speak up or offer support instead of staying silent.
- Focusing on Common Ground
The Qur’an commands us to say, “Our God and your God is One.” This teaches us to build relationships on shared values – justice, mercy, and humanity – rather than dwelling on differences.
Practical Challenge: In your next interfaith or classroom discussion, highlight one moral value that Islam shares with other faiths or cultures.
- Stand firm, Stay humble
Be proud of your Islamic identity without belittling others; strength in belief shines through humility.
Practical Challenge: Share your belief respectfully online without criticising other faiths.
- Online Tolerance
Social media debates often lack empathy; be an example of Qur’anic manners in the digital world.
Practical Challenge: If you see an intolerant post, respond with calm reasoning or simply disengage peacefully.
Educational messages from this verse for parents
- Tolerance Is Not Blind Imitation
Teach your children that accepting and engaging with others does not mean following them blindly. Respectful dialogue can strengthen, not weaken, one’s own authentic beliefs by encouraging deeper understanding and reflection.
Practical Challenge: Discuss with your children one recent conversation or media message – and explore together how they can engage respectfully while keeping a firm grasp on Islamic principles.
- Balancing Faith and Openness
Teach children firm belief in Islam’s truths while encouraging respect for human diversity.
Practical Challenge: Discuss with your children how they can express their faith with kindness in school.
- Teaching Emotional Control
The verse teaches gentleness even in debate; emotional composure prevents many family tensions.
Practical Challenge: When upset, pause before responding. Model “arguing in the best manner.”
Educational messages from this verse for Imams and religious leaders
- Promoting Constructive Dialogue
Encourage interfaith initiatives that allow mutual respect and learning.
Practical Challenge: Organise or participate in an interfaith event or discussion in your community.
- Equip the Next Generation
Train young Muslims to represent Islam wisely and respectfully in schools and public forums.
Practical Challenge: Run a youth workshop on “how to discuss Islam with respect and confidence.”
