Gratitude and Empowerment: A Qur’anic Perspective on Strength and Success
Introduction
The early Muslims in Mecca endured immense hardships, including persecution, exile, and economic boycott. One of the most severe trials they faced was the three-year siege in the valley of Abu Talib (Shi’b Abi Talib), where the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his companions suffered hunger, isolation, and relentless oppression. Yet, in the latter years of the Prophet’s mission, Allah SWT granted the Muslim community strength, prosperity, and security.
In Surah Al-Anfal, verse 26, Allah reminds the believers of their past struggles to encourage gratitude for their present blessings. This reminder resonates with believers today, teaching them to reflect on the blessings they receive after trials and to remain thankful for Allah’s support in their journey.
“And remember when you were few and oppressed in the land, fearing that people might abduct you; then He sheltered you, supported you with His help, and provided you with good things so that you might be grateful.” (Surah Al-Anfal, 8:26)
The message of this verse is deeply relevant for modern Muslims, particularly those living in diverse and often challenging environments. Many face difficulties such as prejudice, economic struggles, or social marginalisation. This verse offers solace and guidance, reminding them to remain steadfast, recognise Allah’s blessings, and use their experiences as a source of strength and gratitude.
