Ayah Of The Week – Volume 03 Issue 10
Guardianship, Generosity and Living Faith: Reflections on the Verse of Wilāyah (Qur’an 5:55)
Introduction
The nineteenth of the Holy Month of Ramadan marks the anniversary of the martyrdom of Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him), who was struck by Ibn Muljam in the year 40 AH. On this solemn occasion, we reflect upon verse 55 of Surah al-Mā’idah – widely known as the Verse of Wilāyah – which highlights the meaning of true guardianship, faith, and devotion expressed through worship and generosity.
“Your guardian is only Allah, His Messenger, and those who believe – those who establish prayer and give charity whilst they bow (in prayer).” (Surah al-Mā’idah, 5:55)

Ali ibn Abi Talib (pbuh) gave charity even when he himself was not wealthy; generosity is about heart, not surplus.

- Redefine Guardianship Beyond Provision
True guardianship is not limited to financial support; a real Walī feels responsible for nurturing faith, strengthening belief in Allah, and actively cultivating religious values within the family.

Guardianship today includes guiding children through online influences.
Practical challenge: Have one open conversation about online values and faith.
