About the Author:
Grand Ayatullah Muhammad Taqi Bahjat Foumani (1916–2009) was one of the most revered and enigmatic Shi’a Muslim scholars, jurists (Marja’), and mystics (‘Ārif) of the modern era, known universally for his intense piety, asceticism, and spiritual insight. Born in Fuman, Iran, he began his religious studies at a young age, eventually pursuing advanced Islamic sciences in Najaf, Iraq, where he became a prominent student of leading masters in jurisprudence and especially gnosticism, most notably Ayatullah Sayyid Ali Qadhi Tabataba’i. Despite his immense scholarly and spiritual status, Ayatullah Bahjat lived an incredibly simple and humble life, largely avoiding public attention and political involvement, and was widely regarded as a practical embodiment of the spiritual teachings he imparted, directing countless students and seekers towards self-purification and sincere servitude to God.
About the Book:
A Mystic’s Advice: Spiritual Guidelines by Ayatullah Bahjat is a profound and accessible collection of teachings and reflections from the esteemed contemporary spiritual master, Grand Ayatullah Muhammad Taqi Bahjat. This book serves as a timeless guide for seekers, drawing on the rich traditions of Islamic mysticism (‘Irfān) and jurisprudence to illuminate the practical path to spiritual refinement and closeness to the Divine. To ensure this vast guidance is easily digestible, the book is structured like a practical spiritual index, categorised into major sections like “The Seven Gardens” and “To the Ways of Peace.” This organisation allows readers to quickly reference the Ayatullah’s methodology, daily programme of worship, and specific spiritual remedies found within sections such as “A Cure for What Is in the Chests” (recommendations for fulfilling needs) and “Fertilising Winds” (direct questions and answers). By compiling his concise statements, lectures, correspondences, and a brief biography in this structured manner, the book becomes a cherished, practical resource for both novice and seasoned travellers on the path to God.
