Hadith Of The Week – Volume03 Issue06
Prayer: The Strongest Weapon Against Shaytan
Occasion of reflection on this Hadith: 15 Sha‘bān: The Birth of Imam al-Mahdī (may Allah hasten his reappearance)
Introduction
On the blessed occasion of the 15th of Sha‘ban, the birth anniversary of Imam al-Mahdi (may Allah hasten his reappearance), we reflect on one of his powerful sayings. In this hadith, he teaches us that nothing humiliates and weakens Shaytan more than sincere prayer:
امام المهدی (عج): فَمَا أُرْغِمَ أَنْفُ اَلشَّيْطَانِ بِشَيْءٍ أَفْضَلَ مِنَ اَلصَّلاَةِ فَصَلِّهَا وَ أَرْغِمِ اَلشَّيْطَانَ
“Nothing humiliates Shaytan more than prayer. So pray, and humiliate Shaytan.” (Tahdhib al-Ahkam, vol. 2, p. 175)
Educational Messages from the Hadith for Teens and Young People
- Pray with Your Heart, Not Just Your Body
Not every prayer defeats Shaytan; only prayer with focus and mindfulness can change your thoughts, words, and actions.
Practical Challenge: In one prayer today, slow down and think about the meaning of the words.
- Be Active in the Fight
Shaytan is actively trying to pull you down, so you must actively resist him; focused prayer is one of your strongest tools.
Practical Challenge: When a bad thought comes, pause and say “A‘udhu billah” before you act.
- Knowledge Must Turn into Action
Knowing that prayer is good is not enough; you must practise it, just as the hadith commands.
Practical Challenge: Choose one prayer to guard carefully every day this week.
- Check Your Prayer by Your Behaviour
If you want to know whether your prayers are accepted, look at your behaviour: if you still follow Shaytan, your prayer needs to improve.
Practical Challenge: At the end of each day, ask yourself: “Did my prayer help me avoid one wrong action today?”
- Sincere Prayer Is Your Shield
Prayer protects your heart from wrong thoughts and habits.
Practical Challenge: Perform one prayer on time every day this week.
- You Are Stronger Than Temptation
Through prayer, you gain the strength to say no to bad choices.
Practical Challenge: When tempted, do a mindful prayer or say a short du‘a’ before acting.
