The True Awaited: Awaiting with Purpose & Becoming the Change We Seek

Introduction

The 15th of Sha’ban marks the blessed birth of Imam Mahdi (AJ), a day that also coincides with the International Day of the Oppressed. Among the differing perspectives on preparing for the reappearance of Imam Mahdi (AJ), one is passive and misguided: believing that we must simply observe the rise of oppression, taking no action, so that its increase hastens the Imam’s return. The correct perspective, however, is an active one: those who await the divinely-appointed leader must themselves stand for justice, support the oppressed, and combat injustice in every form. This approach fosters an engaged, ethical society that upholds the core principles of Islam—justice and fairness.

A powerful Quranic verse supports this active stance:

وَنُرِيدُ أَنْ نَمُنَّ عَلَى الَّذِينَ اسْتُضْعِفُوا فِي الْأَرْضِ وَنَجْعَلَهُمْ أَئِمَّةً وَنَجْعَلَهُمْ الوَارِثِينَ

“And We desired to show favour to those who were oppressed in the land, and to make them leaders and inheritors [of the earth].” (Quran 28:5)

This verse holds immense significance for today’s society. It delivers a message of hope, justice, and empowerment. It reassures the oppressed that their suffering is not in vain and that Allah’s divine plan will ultimately make them leaders of the future. For different groups in society, this verse offers guidance on how to align with justice, resist oppression, and play an active role in creating a better world. Some of these lessons are outlined here.

Lessons from This Verse for Youth and Teenagers

1. Stand Against Oppression

This verse teaches that remaining silent in the face of injustice is not an option. Whether the oppression affects you or others, it is your duty to resist it actively.

Practical Challenge: Identify a cause of injustice around you (e.g. bullying, discrimination, or social inequality) and take one action this week to combat it—whether by raising awareness, supporting the victims, or speaking out.

2. Avoid Being an Oppressor Yourself

Sometimes, people consciously or unknowingly engage in oppression—through unkind words, exclusion, or selfish actions. This verse reminds us to be conscious of our behaviour and ensure we do not contribute to injustice.

Practical Challenge: Reflect on your interactions. Have you intentionally or unintentionally hurt or excluded someone? Make amends by offering kindness and support.

3. Stay Hopeful and Motivated

Despair weakens individuals and societies. This verse assures us that oppression will end, and the righteous will prevail. The ultimate fulfilment of this promise will be in the governance of Imam Mahdi (AJ), Insha’Allah.

Practical Challenge: Each morning, remind yourself of a positive action you can take to improve your own future and the lives of others.

Lessons from This Verse for Parents

1. Teach Children to Reject Oppression

Engage your children in discussions about fairness and oppression. Use stories and real-life examples to teach them to stand for justice.

Practical Challenge: Share a historical or personal story about fighting injustice and discuss its lessons with your children.

2. Where Does Your Family Stand?

Assess whether your family aligns with the supporters of Imam Mahdi (AJ) or unknowingly engages in acts of injustice. Often, the injustices we or our family members commit—whether big or small, intentional or unintentional—go unnoticed or are rationalised by our justifying minds. However, no matter how we perceive them, these acts remain injustices. By engaging in them, we risk placing ourselves in the ranks of those who oppose Imam Mahdi (AJ), rather than among his true supporters.

Practical Challenge: Take time to reflect: Does your family treat everyone with fairness? Do you encourage honesty and justice in your home?

Lessons from This Verse for Imams and Religious Leaders

1. Preach the Importance of Resistance Against Oppression

Emphasise that Islam does not advocate passivity in the face of injustice. Encourage your congregations to be agents of change.

Practical Challenge: Deliver a sermon on active waiting for Imam Mahdi (AJ), focusing on social justice and ethical responsibility.

2. Promote Active, Not Passive, Awaiting of Imam Mahdi (AJ)

Promote the fact that those who truly await the Imam are those who embody righteousness and justice. As the saying goes, “Those who await a just leader must be just themselves.”

Practical Challenge: Organise a community initiative that encourages ethical activism, such as helping the poor or advocating for justice.
