The Bravery and Humility of a Young Abbas (a)

The Duel of Abbas: A Lesson in Strength and Humility

Abū al-Faḍl al-‘Abbās (peace be upon him), known for his unmatched bravery and humility, demonstrated his remarkable character even as a young man. One day, a renowned swordsman from a neighbouring tribe arrived in Kufa, boasting of his skill and mocking the people for their inability to challenge him. The man declared, “Is there no one brave enough to face me?”

The people turned to Imam Ali (peace be upon him), expecting him to answer the challenge. Instead, Imam Ali smiled and said, “My son ‘Abbās will respond.” At this time, ‘Abbās was in his early twenties. When he stepped forward, his imposing presence and calm confidence silenced the crowd.

The duel began, and the swordsman quickly realised he was outmatched. ‘Abbās moved with precision and speed, striking with such power that his opponent struggled to defend himself. Within moments, ‘Abbās disarmed the man, sending his sword flying. With the point of his sword at the man’s neck, ‘Abbās said calmly, “I do not fight for pride or glory. I fight for justice and truth. Leave, and never return with arrogance.”

The humbled swordsman, astonished by the young warrior’s strength and restraint, left in silence. The crowd erupted in admiration, marvelling at the skill and humility of ‘Abbās.

Imam Ali (peace be upon him) embraced his son and said, “You are not only my son by blood but also in spirit. Strength without humility is meaningless, and power without justice is a betrayal of Allah’s trust.”
