1st January 2025 – 30th Jumada II

Ibrahim b. Malik al-Ashtar: A Loyal Commander and Martyr

On the 1st of January 2025 (30th Jumada II), we honour the legacy and martyrdom of Ibrahim b. Malik al-Ashtar, a revered figure in Islamic history. Ibrahim was martyred in 71 AH (690 CE), and his life stands as a testament to unwavering loyalty and courage in the face of tyranny.

As the son of Malik al-Ashtar, a close companion of Imam Ali (a), Ibrahim inherited a legacy of valour and devotion to justice. He was a staunch ally of Imam al-Husayn (as) and upheld the principles of truth and righteousness, even under immense pressure. Known for his military prowess, Ibrahim played a significant role in resisting the oppressive Umayyad regime. His participation in the movement to avenge Imam al-Husayn (a) exemplifies his dedication to defending the honour of Ahl al-Bayt (as) and the ideals they stood for.

Ibrahim’s martyrdom serves as an enduring reminder of the sacrifices made in the struggle for justice. His bravery and steadfastness inspire those who seek to uphold truth in their own lives. May his memory continue to light the path for generations to come.

2nd January 2025 – 1st Rajab

Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (as): The Splitter of Knowledge

2nd January 2025 (1st Rajab) is a day of both celebration and reflection, marking the birth of Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (a) in 57 AH (677 CE). The 5th Imam of the Ahlulbayt (as), Imam al-Baqir (as) is renowned for his title “Baqir al-Uloom,” meaning “The Splitter of Knowledge.” This title signifies his profound role in unveiling the depths of Islamic sciences and guiding the community toward a clearer understanding of divine teachings.

Imam al-Baqir (as) lived during a time of significant transition and opportunity, utilizing this period to lay the intellectual groundwork for what would become the rich heritage of Islamic scholarship. The 2nd of January also marks the demise of Aqa Husayn Khawansari in 1099 AH (1688 CE), a distinguished scholar whose legacy profoundly shaped Islamic jurisprudence and theology. Renowned for his intellectual acumen and deep understanding of religious sciences, Khawansari made significant contributions that continue to influence Islamic thought and academic scholarship. His works provided clarity on complex theological issues and enriched the field of jurisprudence with innovative insights.

Imam Ali al-Hadi (as): The Steadfast Imam

Despite constant surveillance and restrictions imposed by the regime, the Imam remained a beacon of spiritual and intellectual guidance for his followers.

Shihab al-Din al-Suhrawardi: The Master of Illumination

On 5th January 2025 (4th Rajab), we reflect on the life and legacy of Shihab al-Din al-Suhrawardi, known as “al-Shaykh al-Ishraq” (The Master of Illumination), who passed away in 587 AH (1191 CE). A profound philosopher and mystic, Suhrawardi is celebrated for founding the Illuminationist (Ishraqi) philosophy, a school of thought that harmonized intellectual rigor with mystical insight.

Suhrawardi’s philosophy emphasized the centrality of light as both a metaphysical and symbolic principle, representing divine wisdom and the ultimate source of all existence. His works, such as Hikmat al-Ishraq (The Wisdom of Illumination), introduced a unique synthesis of Persian mystical traditions, Greek philosophy, and Islamic thought, offering profound insights into the nature of reality, spirituality, and human understanding.

Although his revolutionary ideas faced resistance and led to his untimely demise, Suhrawardi’s influence endures, inspiring scholars and mystics alike.
