The Defender of the Defenceless: Imam Husayn’s Final Advice
Occasion of reflecting on this Ayah: The 20th of Safar (Arba’een)
Introduction
Arba’een, as the fortieth day after the martyrdom of Imam Husayn (peace be upon him), is a day when millions remember his sacrifice for truth, justice, and human dignity.
On this occasion, it is fitting to reflect upon one of Imam Husayn’s final pieces of advice, which he entrusted to his son, Imam Zayn al-‘Abidin (Imam al-Sajjad, peace be upon them):
الامام الحسین (ع): يَا بُنَيَّ، إِيَّاكَ وَظُلْمَ مَنْ لَا يَجِدُ عَلَيْكَ نَاصِراً إِلَّا اللهَ.
Imam Husayn (as): “My son, beware of wronging anyone who has no supporter against you except Allah.” (Al-Kāfī, vol. 4, p. 25)

Never forget that no matter how powerful someone seems, Allah is always the greatest power and even if nobody notices an act of injustice, Allah always knows the truth.
Practical Challenge: Whenever you are tempted to act unfairly, pause and remind yourself: “Allah is watching me.”
- Do Not Wrong Your Parents
Hurting your parents through disrespect, disobedience, or ungrateful behaviour is a serious form of injustice.
Practical Challenge: This week, do one act of kindness for your parents without being asked.
- Put Yourself in Their Place
Before speaking or acting, imagine that you are the other person.
Practical Challenge: Before making an important decision involving someone else, ask yourself: “How would I feel if this happened to me?”
- Never Stay Silent in the Face of Injustice
Ignoring injustice allows it to continue and makes you a participant in it as well.
Practical Challenge: If you see someone being treated unfairly this week, support them or seek help from a trusted adult.
- Never Join Online Bullying
Even sharing content that damages others’ reputation or encouraging such behaviour is a serious form of oppression, so imagine the seriousness of committing such actions yourself.
Practical Challenge: Before commenting or reposting anything, ask yourself: “Would I say this to the person’s face?”
- Choose Fairness Over Winning
Winning an argument or competition is never worth treating someone unfairly.
Practical Challenge: In your next disagreement with others, be careful not to let your anger lead you to saying things that are untrue or behaving in an inappropriate manner.

- Nurture Your Children’s Religious Faith, Not Just Their Material Needs
Your responsibility is not only to provide food and comfort but also to nurture your children’s faith and character.
Practical Challenge: Set aside one family conversation each week to discuss an Islamic value or moral lesson.
- Do Not Harm Through False Kindness
Giving children everything they want is not always love; allowing harmful choices can become a form of injustice.
Practical Challenge: The next time your child demands something unhealthy or harmful, explain your decision with patience instead of giving in.

Husbands and wives should never abuse the trust they have in one another, because they cannot simply take their personal problems to others.

Practical Challenge: Choose one real-life example each week and discuss together how justice could have been shown instead.
- Children Learn Justice from You
Children copy what they see far more than what they hear.
Practical Challenge: Show fairness at home by listening patiently to every family member before making decisions.
- Protect the Quiet Child
Sometimes the child who complains the least needs the most attention.
Practical Challenge: Spend ten uninterrupted minutes this week talking privately with each child.
- Correct Without Humiliating
Discipline should guide a child, not damage their dignity.
Practical Challenge: The next time correction is needed, speak privately instead of criticising your child in front of others.
- Apologise When You Are Wrong
Parents who admit mistakes teach honesty and humility.
Practical Challenge: If you make an unfair decision, apologise sincerely and explain how you will do better next time.
Educational Lessons of the Hadith for Imams and Teachers
- Explain Modern Forms of Injustice
Help people recognise that injustice appears in everyday life, not only in history.
Practical Challenge: In your next lesson or sermon, include at least three examples of injustice that people may face today.
- Teach Through Real Stories
Stories of oppressors and the consequences of their actions leave lasting lessons.
Practical Challenge: Share one historical or contemporary example that shows how injustice may bring short-term gain but long-term loss.
- Teach How to Prevent Injustice
People need practical habits that help them avoid wronging others before it happens.
Practical Challenge: Encourage your audience to adopt one daily habit of self-reflection before speaking or acting.
- Teach the Importance of Making Amends
When injustice has been committed, sincere repentance should be accompanied by restoring people’s rights whenever possible.
Practical Challenge: Invite your audience to identify one unresolved wrong and take a practical step towards correcting it.
- Highlight the Importance of People’s Rights (Ḥuqūq al-‘Ibād)
Violating the rights of others is one of the most serious matters in Islam and cannot be overlooked.
Practical Challenge: Encourage everyone to review whether they owe anyone an apology, a repayment, or the restoration of a right before the weekends.
- Give Every Person a Voice
Quiet or shy people deserve to be heard as much as confident ones.
Practical Challenge: During your next class or gathering, invite someone who rarely speaks to share their thoughts.
- Stand Beside the Vulnerable
A true coach supports those who cannot defend themselves.
Practical Challenge: Identify one person in your community who may feel isolated and reach out to them personally this week.
